One thing he doesn't mention is the length of the pop rivet is important. The rivet must go fully through the hole with a good 3/16" to 1/4"*** longer protruding behind the interior wall surface. That is so the end can expand, and make a large enough bulb inside the wall to have enough holding strength.

*** The length depends on the rivet material, and wall materials. The package should tell you what thicknesses it is good for.

and there is different diameter and material - alu., stainless, ....
bigger stainless rivet holds more heavy weight than many little aluminium rivets

There are also special rivets called "peel rivets" which spread (like an opening flower) to give a greater spread of load - they are made specifically for use on GRP or similar thin materials.

Used over 500 of these building the kit car.

Some standard like this, some with large heads for bodywork fixing to spread the interior load some stainless ones. Got a right forearm like popeye from using the rivet gun. Mine has a changeable head rather than a swivel one but it does the same thing.

And agree and reinforce what the other have said about length etc.

How true :)

This idea is ok for mounting things to metal surfaces but for wood it is going to loosen or tear out over time.... Because wood does not have the the strength to keep from being worked by rivet and motion and eventually rivet heads will pull through.... Notice it took 4 or 6 pop rivets to hold up the fire extinguisher in first part of video... Usually same extinguisher would only take 2 screws to mount....

Over time I think one will be disappointed when objects start to work loose and you can't tighten it up unless you drill more holes and use more pop rivets....

I suggest if you are mounting to wood you use screws or blind fasteners (like Molly Bolts) or find internal wall support to mount things with screws and leave pop rivets to mounting things to metal surfaces and race car builds and BBQ repairs...

Not sure what they are called, But they are little plastic inserts that you place in the hole and when you put a screw in them the spread apart, would something like that work as I have seen them used for drywall
