Titebond II question

i was looking thru the cra 2011 (i think that was the year), but i saw one trailer that was covered on the outside with maps. really cool!

Well, I figured I would do some experimenting. I picked up some Titebond II, some scraps of wallpaper, and the comics section from the newspaper. I am going to make up some samples and see how they look. I will post some pictures later.

One suggestion might be the Comics section over some fiberglass drywall tape (cheap) ... That would be STRONG ...

Well, I have the day off and it is cold and snowy, I already did my taxes so what to do...glue some wallpaper to a board. I had three different wallpaper scraps and one comic.

I had to tape some of them down because they curled so much.

I didn't have any foam so I used an old piece of laminate flooring figuring it would not be porous like regular wood, just to be fair. Then I glued everything down with a 50/50 mix of Titebond II. Then put a coat over top of the samples.


You will notice that the one has some air bubbles. No matter how much I brushed it, I couldn't get them out. Guess testing a sample beforehand is very important so you aren"t cussin' and spittin' when you are done.

yes, bubbles will form, no matter how much you work it. some will come out not so bad, others ...well... you have found this out. now what i did find out with this stuff is that you can sand it down. it will look like the bubble is there, but it really won't be. i was working on a floor with the brown paper bag, and had bubbles. i go out the sander and went to work. nice a smooth to the touch, but still looks like a bump. if you decide to try the sanding, experiment with different papers, light sand ones, to harsher ones.

Well, it has been four hours. So far I like the newspaper the best. It didn't bubble at all and really seemed to soak up the glue (the wallpaper did not). It did take on a bit of a yellowish tint but it just made it look like old newspaper which I liked. The top two faired samples fared pretty well although do have a bit of yellow. The bottom left sample was the one that bubbled and it shows a lot of discoloration.

I think the Sunday comics might work. Worst case scenario would mean having to put canvas on it later. The upside is it would be cheap,look fun,and you could easily repair it just by slapping up another sheet of newspaper. I guess I should start saving the paper (or do a little dumpster diving for the comic section)

I am going to let them dry for a few days and then do a water test.

If this is planned for the inside you might try Minwax water-based Polycrylic. It dries clear and I have stuck fabric to paper and foam board with it. It is not UV stable if used outside though.

I was thinking about using it outside so that may not work. I will keep it in mind for the inside. I kind of like the matte finish the TB 2 gives it.

Well, this is my second snow day in a row so I started reading the long thrifty thread. It got me thinking that perhaps the best way to go would be to find a nice printed cloth material (Joannes or Walmart) to use as the wrap. The TB2 seems to dry fairly clear so that would give the trailer the strength and provide the decoration too. Has anyone done that? Ok back to the big thrifty.

Dirke , I’ve always thought of a patchwork sorta’ quilt looking covering ... All the multiple overlapping edges would only make the whole thing Stronger ... doubling of the fabric and all ... there’s always lots of cool fabric on SALE ... all left to your imagination how you use it ...

Now that you mention that, our local Salvation Army Store gives away garbage bags full of old t-shirts for rags. you could probably use those and pick and choose your colors.

There is a Titebond III now. I just got a bottle from HD, for a project of mine. I'm looking at the lable and it says: Ultimate Wood Glue - Waterproof- Superior Strength Outperforms All Other Wood Glues. Passes ANSI/HPVA Type I water-resistance.

Wing , and it’s Good stuff too... but dries brown-ish’ ... Some have said it doesn’t like to be glued over itself ... I dunno’ ???

i have used it. i bought it when the store was out of tb2 and one time it was cheaper then tb2. i did not find any difference, except the color of drying. tb2 if i remember correctly dried yellowish, and tb3 dried kaki-ish.
