I would also think 'what would I do different if I did it this way'. It took me 2 1/2 years to build. Again, think things out and don't take short cuts. Build to your goal no matter how small it may be. ;)

Its easy to build a tear at under that cost. Its not easy to build a professional looking tear at under that cost. You did well. I sat down and added up what it was going to cost me to build a camper the way i really want it. I added up everything I could possibly think of and knew I was missing some stuff.... I stopped adding at $5,500 as I was already over budget. I'm sticking with my aloha as its as close to what I wanted anyway. :)

Re: Your build costs - $2400

Postby Irmo Atomics » Sat Feb 23, 2013 6:41 am

Here's my information from a previous post:

viewtopic.php?f=50&t=51954&start=15#p972869

I spent $550 on my frame.
I spent $700 on the framing and interior finishes.
I spent $150 on the electrical. I bought a small air conditioner and I got a dorm fridge at a yard sale for $20.
I spent $1000 on the exterior finish.
So my 6 wide by 9 long (not including tongue) teardrop came in at $2400.

$4, 000 plus 2.5 months of my time. With what I learned I figure I could do it again for probably 70% of the cost and time.

I'm very pleased with the way it came out...

Cowboy, it would now appear that we are all basically “camping” on the crusty surface of a molten ball of rock in the middle of nowhere and Everything ... ;)

The cost of any Camper should come down to the intended use ... If you’re going to live in it , then why not go First class, if just occasionally camping or Fishing , then you don’t need so much .. But like Big Mike has always so profoundly stated : “ The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten, so build your teardrop with the best materials...”

didn't keep track of, I had the trailer I started with, paid $500 for it several years ago, but with new axels, new wheels and brakes, that bumps the roller up to about $1300, aluminum and insulation and so on, heading for another $1500, a ton of freebies and cheapies as I work in the shop end of the rv industry.
I'm probably around $4000 real dollars spent, and to replace my freebies / cheapies, another$5000 - $6000, so the replacement not including labor would be getting close to 10 grand, throw in labor and my insured amount of $12000 probably wouldn't cover it
Actual price of the trailer....PRICELESS ;)
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is

Lol gpw and slow I wasn't targeting anyone but as an amateur myself, I can still spot a tear that looks homemade or one that looks manufactured. Its when the quality blurs those lines and a home made tear makes you wonder what company manufactured it that qualifies it as "professionally built" in my mind.

P.S. Slow, you might add "professional camper" to your resume.

What a great Idea!
It would eliminate bringing home those large bulky garbage bags full of empties from camping! :R
Will yours be hydraulic, electric over hydraulic, air, or just plain old manual?
Love to see your scetches or autocad drawings!
Maybe it is something else Rob could investigate????? :?

We bought our teardrop and spent way more than we wanted to, but weren't able to build it at home. Super cold in the winter and no enclosed garage. My original dream was to use the plans for the Big Woody, as they are so beautiful. Unfortunately as most of it's life will be in fickle New England weather we opted for the Little Guy version.

Gage,
Beautiful teardrop! How did you make your awning? My husband and I were talking about making one for ours. I like how you roll up the side.
