Brought my TD home today!

Postby Backroads4me » Wed Feb 27, 2013 8:42 pm

Bob and I brought our 5 X 9 TCTeardrops home today. Towed like a dream, smooth hauling the 60 mile trip. Todd & Carol Mowrer, the owner's of TCT, were wonderful to work with, answered all questions quickly and courteously. I was able to make changes and additional requests(quite a few) up to the very last minute, no problems at all.

Here's some photos of our rig "Solitude" (named after an O. Winston Link steam train photo). The black square on the galley door is a solar panel.

Yikes, I guess this board doesn't have those automatic photo shrinkers. Sorry about the large photo, hopefully this one is now smaller.

Thank you for the kind words. We're hoping to get some "late winter/really, really early Spring" camping done in the next few weeks. Most of the state parks up this way (central Wisconsin) are closed until April 1st or the 15th, so we'll probably make our maiden voyage to our favorite--Govenor Dodge State Park. They keep some sites open for winter. Meanwhile, I've got some bedding and curtains to sew up, and getting everything in it's place. When it warms up a bit, we might do a night or two of garage camping.

The hardest part of bringing the camper home was sitting at the DMV this afternoon, waiting to see how the folks there were going to register and plate it. Yes, I know, my teardrop didn't have to be registered or carry plates. It's way under the weight limit for those requirements, BUT---for the $60 to title it, and the $13.50 a year to keep plates on it, I figured it would keep out of state cops from pulling us over. Bob and I like to keep what's his, his and what's mine, mine, for the sake of separate financial and estate planning. The fun part was watching the original clerk at the DMV take my paperwork and photo's (thank goodness I brought some photo's!) to the other clerks asking what to do with it, then finally taking it to the gal who orignally worked for the state patrol. According to the original clerk, my teardrop was (according to the ex-state patrol gal), "pushing the limit" as to whether it was an RV, or a trailer to haul stuff in. Apparently, as long as more than 50 percent of the trailer was "living space" it could be registered as an Rec. vehicle. The front cargo area, and the galley kitchen area were "problemsome". After a bunch of going back and forth, they finally decided it was an RV and it's sitting in the garage with plates on it now. :)

Whether it was computer monitor color differences, or how the inside shop lights affected the color sample chart, the trailer came out a little more green than I expected. I originally had wanted it in a dark teal, but being an art major I knew it would bug me if it didn't turn out the exact shade of teal I had in mind. So I opted for the RAL6004, which looked to me a dark Blue/Green (a good compromise)---see chart below:

Anyway, while I would have liked it more "bluish" green, it's a nice woodsey, camping color, and will camoflage easier when we park it in the back yard amongst the evergreen trees (to backyard camp/sleep in between roadtrips--neighbors are OK with it, we checked). I know I sound like Myrna Loy with the paint chip samples.

Here's some interior shots----at the front is a sliding door cabinet, underneath a "map shelf". We're going to keep my puzzle books, Etch A Sketch, games, and other "roll arounders" in that narrow slot. Some of the electicals plug ins are located there:

I'm thinking of doing roll up curtains for both the door and windows, using some kind of buckle or click closer (like in a dog collar) instead of tieing bows or knots.

This headboard area is singing it's siren song "I need some decor"-----maps, perhaps a copy of my O. Winston Link's "Solitude" print, or maybe Edward Hopper's "Gas". Lots of possibilities. I went with the darker Minwax Antique Maple gel stain for a more retro look. It could have been even been a bit darker, I'll ponder on it awhile.

I mentioned bringing an Etch-A-Sketch along while camping----it's one of my favorite things to do while sitting around camp. Here's a photo of one of my endeavors, no patterns used, just sat there fiddling with the buttons:

Great looking trailer! Is that the 5x9 or 5x10 size? One option you might consider is just putting the plastic privacy film on your doors, and use curtains for the windows. I did that on my little trailer and I really like it. we sleep with our heads the window side, so can see outside if we are hanging out in the trailer, and we still get light through the doors during the day time but noone can see in at night. Curtains on the doors can get stuck in the door when you are closing them etc...Home Depot and Lowes carry different designs including stain glass patterns...purty and easily removed if you get tired of them. They just stick on and can be peeled off. :)
