Boat disposal

Well, it looks like I have a free trailer! Now just wondering what to do with the old boat on it. Any ideas? I already thought of a planter but I don't think my wife would like that.

Ah, the old catch 22. Can't sell a boat without the trailer, but can't use the trailer before disposing of the boat. Depending on the size and type of boat, someone might take it off your hands. However, without the trailer that's tricky. Dock it at your local marina and then abandon ship.

If I can't figure out a way to sell it or regift it, I believe a sawzall might do the trick. I can just slip a few pieces at a time into the garbage can. If it is an aluminum boat then I am set. Sell it for scrap and take the money for the teardrop. Maybe there are parts I can use for my build. I had better go check it out first before I get too excited.

I took an old 14' boat to the dump. I had built a sailing ship out of it for a town float. When I was done I drove to the dump and rolled it off and left with the trailer.

I've gotten rid of a whole house worth of carpet and other large items by doing this. I also have used unused capacity in my neighbor's trash cans. Where there is a will, there is a way.

I used the sawzall on mine. 18' fiberglass fish and ski. Saved all the ss screws and aluminum pieces off of it to reuse on something down the road. The hatch lids looked good for something.

I had a 14' or so boat years ago that we used as a playground toy.
Cut a walk through in the back and set it in a pile of sand.
The kids loved it!

Well, my wife just happens to be expecting a baby in September. That is a great idea! I will have to see how badly off it is but that could make a great sandbox. I suppose I don't even need to put sand in it yet. We also have a tree house that is just a platform right now. Could make a good roof if it isn't too heavy. I am hoping we will get a thaw so I can go take a look at it.

It kinda depends on what the boat is you are wanting to dispose of. I purchased a late 50's fiberglass boat, stripped the engine and controls off it for a mahogany boat project, and since it was a finned glass boat only 14'...sold it and ended up with a 1959 45hp. Mercury outboard at no cost. If it's nothing special as mentioned...a sawzall will take care of it quickly. Doug

I can only hope it will be something worth selling. It would give me some money to start my build! If I do have to dispose of it, I am going to try and salvage anything i can for my TD. I was thinking there might be some cabinets or some sort of some trim. I am excited to see the thing but I have to wait for a thaw. We are up to our skivvies in snow here in Northern Michigan.

look for your local place that is like rawhide
they will take a boat as a donation without a trailer
but then again if its in too bad of shape and they dont think they can make a couple bucks off of it then they wont take it either

dont even think about abondending it at a marina it will come back to haunt you even if it is in some one else name
you will be stuck with the fees of them holding it and disposing of it because the old owner will have said they sold it and they will trace the trailer back to you if you register it for your camper and thats if they dont have video tracking the place

Not sure if you got rid of it yet but I just did the same thing here in Virginia a couple months ago. I put the boat for $100 bucks on Craiglist and got no bites. I put it for free and had 30 offers to come get it. I ended up taking it to him and dropping it off. Was easy and fast.

Sounds like a plan. There are plenty of scroungers around here. I haven't picked it up yet. I am going to look at it tomorrow just to be sure it will work for me.

I have a friend who took his put it in the back yard and filled it with water an made it into a back yard pond with fish and floating flowers.
