Newbie from Ireland with new build

Postby mxer_kk » Wed Feb 27, 2013 5:16 pm

Hello from Ireland.

My name is Ian. I'm in the process of finishing a new Teardrop. My friend built the chassis in steel and skinned the trailer in aluminium. It is 8 foot x 5 foot.

Just looking around for ideas at the moment to help me finish it for the summer.

I've a couple of ideas to incorporate into the build.

1. A single bunk for little people
2. A hinged galley counter with access to coleman 36qt cooler and battery area
3. Some kind of pass thru from the galley

Here are a few pictures...

All ideas welcome, thanks.

Welcome Ian!
I have to ask, where in Ireland are you? My husband and I were talking the other day about finding a TD to use the next time we're there. My biggest concern is accidentally getting mixed in with Travelers. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks! :D

Hi Sarah, I've never seen a teardrop in the flesh in Ireland before but they are available for hire in Britain. I'm based in Kilkenny. As for our travelling cousins, they like bigger caravans so no fear of being mixed up with them.

Thanks for the assurance, Ian. I'll pass that info on to my husband. :D

BTW, Kilkenny is my favorite place in Ireland.

Welcome to the forum and I hope you will share some of your camping experiences. the best advice is to look through the builds, lots of very innovative and beautiful examples.

Thanks shadow catcher, got some great ideas this evening looking at the site. Some ingenious solutions for keeping the hatch up.

Welcome to the forum Lan. It's nice to see another steel frame tear being built. I have built two with steel framing.
The second one only used half as much tubing and I think I could have used even less.
How did you fasten the aluminum sides?
Great looking teardrop. Keep up the good work.

Nice looking build so far. My next one is going to be Half wood and Half Aluminum tubing so I curious on how
you are going to finish the inside.

Bunks are doable but you lose access to inside cabinets or replace the cabinets with the bunk. Are you planning
on splitting that galley area in to inside and galley cabinets? Most pass thru you see here are in the middle and
people use them to swivel around a small TV for inside and outside galley tv watching. I posted this in another
thread to another guy but it is a nice ideal.

“ I just read through a nice post tonight. It is for a weekend / rockhopper style design. It had a passthru to the
galley. Most of the smaller teardrops I seen that have a passthru just use them for small stuff like coffee pots
or access to a small microwave.

Here is the link. It is the 4 page on this thread. "

I have not see any TD yet that people can access the galley cooler. The one linked above it nice because you
can set up your coffee pot ( or teapot ) on a timer in the galley the night before and have access to it in the
morning. If you don’t mind crawling on your mattresses.

Make sure of you use a battery with acid it will not vent into your sleeping area.

PS. check out this one for a bunk..

Thanks Terry for the help, 2 great links there.

I'm going to skin the interior using timber cladding(sheeting), corncountry's gallery shows the same and it looks great.
It will be 7mm thickness. I'm going to start with ceiling and than walls.

I'll sacrifice storage for the bunk for now. The pass thru looks really good on that link you sent me. I'll incorporate that and hope the bunk can double as a counter for the children to use when the weather is .... Irish.

Thanks for reminding me about venting the battery.

For the galley counter I'm thinking 12mm plywood hinged and cut in 3 places so that I can access the individual storage areas as required. I've ordered the cooler so once it arrives I can decide on measurements.

thanks

Ian

Some more build pictures. Been busy with wood cladding. Found good SAS wheel clamp. Cooler bought. Wiring runs worked out. Conduit sourced. Wood sourced for bunk. New makita mitre saw has arrived...
