What to see in Colorado

Postby Vedette » Sat Mar 02, 2013 8:51 am

Well I had such great success with gathering information for our upcoming trip, on my last Post about the Bryce & Zion Canyons.
I thought I would get some advice on what to see in Colorado.
We will be travelling thru from North to South in July.
Pikes peak is on my Bucket list so we will be taking the Studebaker to the top!
What else does the great State of Colorado have to offer that we should not miss?

Vedette,

On my roadtrip to CA in 2011, I had the pleasure of riding through parts of Colorado and I would strongly recommend the following:

1. The Million Dollar Highway
2. The Colorado National Monument
3. The San Juan National Forest
4. Grand Mesa
5. Rocky Mountain National Park

Since you will be in the 'general' area, I would also highly suggest the following sites (if time permits):

1. Canyonlands and Arches NP's - Moab, UT
2. Monument Valley

Have fun and be sure to take extra storage media for your camera (there are tons of photo/video ops)!

Mesa Verde
Durango Silverton train
Train tickets are not cheap, don't sit in the open car.

Thanks Rolly
These are the type of things we need to know!
I would have chosen the open car without hesitation without this info :?
And regretted it later :x
Thanks

We loved the open car on the way up. The view is much better, the soot in your hair only adds to the experience, and the open car being at the back of the train makes for some great pictures on the hairpin turns allowing you to get shots of nearly the whole train ahead of you. The ride back became very long. That said, if I was doing it again, I'd take the open car up for sure and ride the bus back to Durango. That way you get to see more country and when you're tired the bus provides a more relaxing ride home. Buy tickets early. The sooner the better.

Other places I've enjoyed in Colorado is Garden of the Gods and you will be right there when in the Pikes Peak area. And my all time favorite, not to be missed is a second vote for Mesa Verde.

If you like the steam trains, then when you're in the southern part of Colorado, there is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic railroad too. If you happen to be heading to durrango from the Springs area, take US160 W off of I 25 at Walsenburg. The northern depot is in Antonito, CO south of Alamosa on US 285. Tickets range, Adults $169.00 to $89.00. They have an open gondola car too, but it never seems to be the last car of the train.

+1 on the Cumbres Toltec....that's a great trip! Durango / Silverton is a great trip as well, especially if you know someone with a restored vintage railcar that they can tag on the train for your own private party. That was a great time! Rocky Mt. Natl. Park is a good time as well. Doug

Georgetown loop railway is near Golden. It's just an up and back, but you can also stop and check out an old silver mine on the ride back.
