cutting both side profiles at once?

Postby mcwbyu82 » Sat Mar 02, 2013 10:02 pm

So I will hopefully get cutting out my side profiles this weekend. If you look at my build thread you will see I am going with the "Simple" profile as from the design library and a plain rectangle door.
I am using 3/4" plywood for my sides. Anyone see any problem with clamping both pieces together and making the cuts just once?
I know the generic plans warn against this but from what I understand that is because of the curves and need to use a jigsaw. I will be using a circular saw and have all straight cuts.

That should be no problem...I would use a fence/guide to insure that your cuts are nice and straight however. Doug

Yeah I thought so just wanted some confirmation. And I will for sure use a straight guide.

I tried it and ended up with the bottom side bigger because the blade angled slightly as it was cutting. I just belt sanded them while together and it worked well.

Jigsaw blades tend to wander in anything thicker than 1inch. With your circular saw you should be ok though. You could cut them each then screw together temporarily and belt sand them together? If you have a router, best thing to do is make a 9mm mdf template then rough cut both sides with the jig saw then clamp to the template and use a flush trim bearing bit. Both sides will be perfect. This worked for me, cheapo router as well.

Another thing to add is that if your face sides are different then you have plan for a left side and right side facing out.

So I went for it and it worked great. I did make sure to make note of interior/exterior sides first :D

Turned out awesome and I finally got a feel for my trailer :applause:

Looks good mate, I found getting the sides up like you have helps to get a real feel for sizes, rather than just on paper
