do tv antennas still work

Postby ksmack01 » Sun Mar 03, 2013 6:52 pm

Does anyone know if you can still pick up local channels on antennas. I am working on an outdoor entertainment center on my camper and have an antenna set up off an RV that would be handy to have IF I can pick up anything. Thanks

Yes they do, However you will need the converter box for an older set . a problem you may run into is that the new digital signals are a lot less powerful than the old analog. You may need MORE antenna, or small signal booster if you're out in the woods. Height is your friend.

We don't have cable! :applause: Just rabbit ears with a signal booster for local programing and Netflix for movies/old TV programs.

They sure do :). I cut the cord to cable (actually dish network) years ago. Digital tv in my area brings 3 channels with old tv shows, the way TV Land was supposed to, that provide real entertainment without the crass, foul "humor"

MASH, Sanford and son, all in the family, the rifleman, emergency! Are my routine entertainment.

Check out the Winegard Rayzor flat antenna. I just bought one from Camping World. A few days ago I did a comparison between it and the Winegard fold out antenna that I previously installed on our Uhaul camper. It worked as good or better than the fold out antenna. With the newer digital TVs we use camping, every time we move or switch from cable to the antenna we have to run a channel scan on the TV.

With my wooden roof mounted dish connected to my flip-down wooden Sony Plazma TV, all I can get are films about pinochio and woody woodpecker. Go figure :-)

I ditched the dish when I got layed off. 65 bucks a month for basic service could be well spent somewhere else. Went to Radio Shack and bought their mid priced antenna for 80 bucks and I get almost 60 stations. Granted, at least half of them are foreign language and televangelists, selling anointed towels and guarantees of financial success, but I get all of the commercial stations 10 or 12 PBS stations and a few others. The programming is pretty good if you like old TV and obscure movies. Ozzie and Harriet, Burns and Allen, Jack Benny, The Beav, Hoppy.......not so bad for a geezer like me

Check out antennaweb.org to find local stations & the direction to aim your antenna. Been contemplating cutting the cord for some time now…

Go to advanced search in the upper right corner and type in " redneck antenna " and as posts by type in " bobhenry " You will find 28 posts on the redneck antenna. A No cost very effective homebuilt antenna I have had mine for over 5 years and they have saved me well over $2500.00 in would be cable bills. 16 crystal clear channels on an old worn out analogue Magnavox TV with a converter. In those 28 posts you will find how to build and where to aim your antenna for the best reception for channels in your area. Here is one of those posts showing the little unit.

We bring a compact TV antenna when we go camping. The antenna clamps to a broom handle which we bungee to one of the pop-up canopy uprights. I wish I had a picture of the setup but I don't. This is the antenna we use: http://www.amazon.com/Eagle-Aspen-Dtv2Buhf-Directv-Antenna/dp/B000GIT002/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&qid=1362405659&sr=8-18&keywords=tv+antenna.

At home, we have one tv on satellite and the other with a redneck antenna as Bob described.

When we are in the boonies, we've been known to hoist an antenna from the nearest tree. With a 50' cable, we have had pretty good success.

When do you have time to watch TV? I go camping to get away from all that but I may change my mind when I get done reading my book. We never got that far in the process, maybe some day.

we had time to watch TV because we were in our camper for 3 months, December 1 to March 1. Also read 4 books. Most of the time we had cable TV so didn't use the antenna much.
