Insurance for custom builds

Postby Mark519 » Mon Mar 04, 2013 4:34 pm

So now that I have built my custom cargo trailer conversion, it is worth far more than the $5500 I paid for the empty trailer. But that is all USAA will insure it for. Has anyone found an insurance company that will underwrite the actual cash value, based on some sort of appraisal?

We added our tear to our Allstate auto policy. Gave them a number I thought it was worth, and they priced it according to that.
Only runs around $35 a year.

When I went to add my trailer to my Allstate auto insurance, my agent warned me that any value over the purchase price had to be carefully documented and that virtually every penny would be challenged by the adjuster in the event of a loss.

That Austrian insurance won't do you much good if your trailer gets hit by an auto, or are you going to just shoot the driver

I am keeping copies of all my receipts from building it......."I'll see your challenge and raise you a receipt" 8)

Nationwide asked for nothing more than a verbal, what I spent and based repairs on what the adjuster said. The adjuster found the shop that would do the repairs correctly.

I have a insurance plan with State Farm Insurance and I pay $50.00 a year but the value on mine is $15,000 and I took it to the state farm insurance office and the appraiser looked it over and went over it and came back with the value of $15,000. It is always good to have insurance policy on your build that you do. They will look and make sure it was done correctly and the electrical is safe and not having wires running all over the place. And it is safe for the road for travels. But State farm Insurance is a good company to go through on that.

one of my biggest fears with building my tiny house is having it vandalized or stolen, I had checked my insurance agen and if I register the trailer as a utility trailer with a $20,000.00 value then my insurance with my load (the house and everything inside) was going to run me $47.00 a year

I seem to recall that the items within the trailer are covered by your homeowners/renters policy. So don't forget about that!
