Fiberglassing weight?

Postby Bigblock352 » Wed Mar 06, 2013 8:51 am

I love the look of the fiberglass over wood. Makes the wood look great and just looks so cool, but how much does that weigh? I want to build a light camper but for the right things I'll take a hit in the weight department.
Also is this something a lay person can do or would the expense vs learning curve not be worth it?

THANKS!

If you're talking about a natural wood under glass or epoxy with that deep appearing finish, the drawback isn't the weight, it's the time and cost. As far as experience...you gotta learn sometime if you ever want to do it in the future. Read up on it's application first. Doug

I put an RAKA epoxy coating over a camo cloth instead of a fiberglass cloth. It takes time, money and patience but it wasn't too hard. If you are only using the epoxy coating to clearcoat/waterproof the wood exterior it is even easier.

That's a really cool idea. Love the camo!
And Yes I am talking about that deep looking finish over wood. Looks awesome! I think I'll try it on some smaller pieces first to see if its something I can swing, in the wallet and in the skills department.
Both of you thanks for the input.

For newbie type information on fiberglassing over wood try looking for books and websites about strip-built canoes. Laughing Loon Canoes, Redfish Kayaks, Ted Moores, Susan van Leuven and a whole lot of others. The books are relatively cheap education and the websites are free and some are really loaded with info. If you are at all the handy sort, fiberglass is not really difficult though kind of intimidating at first.

Best,
Tom

I actually found the Raka Epoxy Manual the most useful for me. Here it is:
