SUV Tents

Postby PKCSPT » Fri Mar 01, 2013 6:06 am

I tried looking but my search abilities seem to be limited.
Has anyone used one of the tents made to be used on the back of a SUV or small van on the side of their teardrop? I have found them for around $100 which I realize is probably not going to survive a lot of use but I can afford it for now. Trying to find a very inexpensive tent so if my grandkids want to camp with me I have a place for them.

I did a quick search on suv tents and came up with lots of hits including this one

My personal recommendation base on experience with our children is that they, as they grow up, want a bit of distance and a stand alone three person tent makes more sense. My recommendation is also stay away from cheap tents. We have had Kelty tents and many times after a rain storm would see others with sleeping bags and clothing hanging on a line drying. We never had that problem.
What we will do when the grandchildren are old enough (read, are house broken) tents will be close enough for the entrance to be sheltered by the Kelty car tarps we use for the side of our tear.

My oldest grandchild is finally at the stage (housebroken) where I am anxious to take her along if she wants. But at 4 years I am not comfortable having her in a completely separate tent.

Maybe I will get lucky and find a good used tent that attaches for $100 or close to it.

We use the one from Cabela's. If I remember correctly we paid $199 three years ago. It works very well for us on our 4X10 TD. Have a picutre of it in my gallery.

Wingnut,, how do you tie it to your tear? Does it fit snug enough to keep the bugs out?
I see it works so now to get one.

Karen,
WE set the tent up as close to the trailer as we can get it. In some csmpgrounds that we've been, it can hard to find a sight that will fit the TD with the tent that has 10x10 foot print. Anyway, after getting tent up, we use 1/4 shock cord attached to the tube opening to pull it tight to the side and top of the TD. It works great for us. It took some trial and error to get the cord lengths just right, but after the adjustments were good, I put small metal hooks on the ends for clipping to the TD.
We like the extra living space. We set our porta pottie in the tent for use at night. We have a couple of camp chairs and a small table that will fit in, that we use if the weather turns bad and we need to get in out of the weather to eat or just sit and read or play cards. :wine: It's very nice to be able climb out in the morning and stand up and get dressed. We also carry a small electric heater and have used it to heat the tent durring cool periods. The 1500W heaters keeps it nice and toasty. :)
If you look in our personal picture gallery you will find several pics of our TD with the tent set up. There is one view taken of the inside of the tent. We set the tent on the right side of the TD. Guess who sleeps on that side.

We use the exact same tent and set-up as Wingnut. It gives us some needed privacy and room for the clothes and the loo. You know the saying: Happy wife, happy life. Granted, it takes some time to set it up and tear it down, but, we like it. If you go this route, practice setting up at home before you go camping.
