Truck bed liner

Postby Paw_Paw_Drew » Fri Jul 14, 2006 3:21 pm

this may seem like a strange idea but has anyone thought about using truck bed liner material to coat the outside of a TD. I found that it now comes in an assortment of colores and from smooth to textured. Here is a sight I found with above and I am sure there are more.

I saw a fella at the spring fling campout use the lineX material on his teardrop. He loved it. Made it very durable and it looked nice.

i know a guy who used that stuff instead of paint on his jeep. it is interesting to say the least. don't see any reason why not though, smooth would be great, i think.

Been done, Arthur. Saw a good looking blue one at Minden last summer. Sorry, all I have pictures of on that one was the galley, so you can't really see much of the sides, but it was one good looking teardrop. But the owner mentioned it was really heavy. Something to consider.

PeePaw,

I used the black paint-on kind to coat my trim and other areas. I painted over it and it bonded. Works very well  . I have found that the spray-on  kind will peel in no time. I'll post the brand that I used.

I know someone posted the picture of the blue one not to long ago, but I can't find it! It looked pretty nice!

Thanks for the replies. As I have stated I am still in the idea stage. I was thinking this might be a good product to both waterproof and strenghten a glued construction.

I am leaning heavely toward a single wall construction perhaps using 3/8" plywood. Two coats of this would add 1/16" ,waterproof, and hopefully add strenght.

According to spec's it only weighs 10lbs per gallon in the can, I don;t know what the weight would be cured. I figure it would take 3 gls to do the job right as each can covers 60 sq ft

Durabak - the product linked in the URL above. I used it on a boat deck a few years ago. It never set up completely even after about 6 months. The company rep told me it was due to "problems with their supplier" and gave me replacement product. A lot of good that did, with no way to remove it without tearing off the decks, I just left it. It was a definite disaster. I lost thousands of dollars on that boat. I think I would give Durabak a big  But before bought it, the hype on the web site looked great.... I just wouldn't trust them again, not on anything I care about.

I am drawn to the idea of a sprayed on finish like this as well. This thread was last posted in 7 years ago. Any truck bed liner finished trailers since then?

I used truck bed liner on mine. I did it mainly because mine sits in the driveway all year!
It was white but I ended up painting it because I could not keep it clean. I think it has been 6 years and I have had no problems with it.

Looks great. What brand did you use? Did you do it yourself? Roll on or spray on? What did you use to till any gaps and cracks before applying the truck bed liner?

Thanks!
I used Duraback. I think HERCULINER http://www.herculiner.com/ would be just as good and cheaper.....Yes I did it my self it is a roll on....I used fiberglass tape on the seams and thickened epoxy to fill holes and dings!

You thicken your epoxy with a thickener it goes buy a couple names when you order you epoxy ask the suppler for a thickener.
I like these guys tell them what you are building and they will only sell you what you need.

I also think they have the best epoxy's on the market and I have used a lot. I help one of my friends build composite kayaks.

How many gallons did your trailer require?
