Anyone using a wireless brake controller?

Postby hwitten » Tue Mar 19, 2013 1:55 pm

I don't want to drill holes in the dash and will probably use different vehicles on occasion to tow same trailer.

Is anyone using a wireless such as:

I work with wireless on a daily basis, and it ain't THAT dependable.

Call me old school, but I don't want stopping my rig dependent on a signal that can be interrupted.
The more stuff I take along, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!

Any chance someone with another wireless controller could activate your brakes when you don't want them to be applied?

So dont drill dash..... Mount brake under dash where holes will never be seen if you ever remove controller.... Quite frankly once you get it set, you will rarely ever need to adjust it or manually over ride brakes.... If it was totally out of sight (mounted inside console) it would be just as effective once you get settings correct....

I agree that wireless ism predictable. Sounds good, but too flakey for me. There are things you don't compromise. Safety itms are in the category.

The only time I touch my manual application lever....that's to check operation when. First take off. Hiding the controller isn't that hard,....there's always a way...

I got a new Traverse last June. I bought a Magellan wireless back up camera with a compatible GPS. I had to get three replacements before I got one that is reliable.

It's a bit of work to wire a vehicle for a brake controller but you can put a plug on the controller and easily move it from one vehicle to another. I got a Tekonsha Brake Boss for a third the price of the wireless one. I suspect You can get extra brackets for em so you can move it from one vehicle to the next. The bracket has double sticky tape on it but I hate the residue it leaves if you ever want to remove the bracket. Sooooooo, I opted to drill two holes in the plastic trim under the dash and mounted a thin piece of aluminum and stuck the bracket to the aluminum. If I ever decide to remove the bracket I'll just pull the aluminum plate off, paint two #8 screws to match the trim, and plug the holes. No one but me will ever notice.

I bought my Traverse with a tow package so it was easy to install the controller after I located a cable to plug into the Traverse's connector. GM doesn't make the required cables, sell em, or know where to get em, or even that they're required. Customer "non-service" from corporate headquarters was slightly less than useless. I figured out how to call the factory (their phone numbers are closely guarded secrets). I simply asked myself who would know the # and called the UNION. I got the president of the Union. Within an hour I had a fellow from the factory floor calling me. We figured out that GM doesn't sell the cable and he sent me one he got from an engineer! The Union guys were the only ones at GM that seemed to care. They have my support now. The representatives for "Managment" were useless. One fellow, after I bought the vehicle for its 5,200# tow capacity (and the $525 tow package) told me that the Traverse wasn't suitable for towing because it is front wheel drive. The folks at the factory were not happy to hear what customer service was saying about the vehicle they were building, ha.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Gus

while I've never used a wireless brake controller I mounted the one I have in my F150 on the fuse panel door.
there's not much room anymore in most vehicles to fine an out of the way place.
I haven't had a need to use the stopping lever in an emergency but I can easily reach it if I needed too.
that's one reason not to hide it in an out of the way place like a storage box.
since my controller has a socket that it plugs into I can switch it from truck to car easy.
or if I wanted it can be stowed away until it is needed.

Thank you for all your comments.

Did more digging and have decided to go with the RF.
To some extend because moving it to another tow vehicle will be easier.

Turns out that the controller is self contained and the remote is only used to set it, get feedback as to health and to apply brakes manually.
Random brake application is probably as remote as a wire chaffing on a permanent install.
Brakes will work at last setting even if Remote is disconnected.

Will report back after my cross-country trip in 6 weeks or so.

Well they must have some confidence in their product to sell it.

Sure would make installation a bit easier if your vehicle isn't factory wired for a controller.

Good luck.
