I went back a couple pages and read some of your tribulations with the hatch. One thing that jumped out at me was the ribs. Since you're thinking of starting over and rebuilding your hatch, I want to recommend that you cut your ribs from plywood rather than lumber. Plywood will cure the splitting problem you had with plain ol' lumber. Less weight too!
I'm not sure exactly what all your problems are. If you could put up some pix 'splaining your problems, it would help all of us understand better. It'll help you understand, too. Or, just explain it to the wife. The effort of verbalizing will help you focus on the problem(s), and she'll have some "dumb" questions where you're overlooking the obvious. It's worked for me. Two heads better than one, too many cooks, etc.
