important question from the wife

my wife loves to camp, but she hates having dirty hair; has anyone tried the no-rinse shampoo? does it work? anyone have testimonials for or against it?

Our local REI carries this type, and not very expensive

it claims to remove scent, but I think the wifey is more concerned about oils in her hair.... looking forward to hearing your opinions

It works but don't expect your hair to be as clean as if you washed it.

I find a plastic dish pan and a 2 liter bottle of warm water and some camp shampoo like this one http://www.campmor.com/outdoor/gear/Product___84841 with the help of some one else works the best!

I used it on my mother in law's hair when she wasn't up to a shampoo. It worked very well if done right. You are not washing it out though so some folks might be sensitive. If your wife has thick or very long hair it will take a lot. Her hair will still be wet btw.

If you can find no rinse shampoo caps like they use in the hospitals, those work really well. You take the shampoo cap out of the bag, add hot water or microwave to warm, put it on your head, scrub like you are towel drying your hair with a towel, take the cap off, and PRESTO... clean hair. It smells good, removes oils and build up, and if it is good enough for hospital use then it is good enough for camping.
I spend months on end in hospitals with my kids. The longest stay was 2 consecutive years. As a matter of fact, I am at the hospital right now. I live 3 hours from the hospital so I avoid driving home. I am used to making due in the hospital setting (not being the patient) and as far as hair, I suggest the shower/shampoo caps (baths are out of the sink with paper towels sometimes). They also have a REALLY THICK diaper wipe type of wipe for bed baths. Those kind of make you feel sticky until you dry. After you dry off you feel fine with those too. We always carry those in the car. Once again (you use those the same way as the shampoo cap) you open the wipe bag, add hot water or microwave to the right temp., and wash off. I am so used to those products that I would never use any soap on my hair for "camping" cuz I'd be worried about greasy look and build up on my scalp.

My Lovely Assistant has used this product. Seems like she got it at local outlet of national chain drugstore. Worked fairly good for a day or two .

I'm with your wife there. I don't consider myself high maintenance, but I always feel totally scummy if I can't wash my hair at least every other day when camping. I have thick shoulder length hair. After shampoo day, I can do a ball cap for another day (and half maybe) but that's about it. I can wash up with hot water in a dish pan so the rest of me feels ok but I feel grungy without shampooing after a while. If I'm going to be camping in an area where there aren't any showers I would most definitely need a contingency plan. I would probably boil up some water over the fire or camp stove to mix up with some cool water to wash and rinse my hair and go with having a larger dish pan or a smaller sized plastic tote tub (they're deeper and I could fill it up a bit with water, dunk my head in and swish my hair around to get most of the shampoo out). With most of the shampoo out, a good sized pitcher of warm water to pour over my head and rinse out the rest would do the trick. A camp shower could come in handy for this also.

I don't have any experience with hospital shower caps, I am envisioning a prepackaged cap that has some sort of shampoo already inside? they sound like an easy one time use item that we could store a few in the trailer all the time. hopefully not to expensive... are any particular brands good? there is a medical supply store close by my house that I never really considered browsing for camping gear... maybe I should go check it out. who knows what else I might find
