Can you take a close-up pic?

Other than a few shots that I already took, no, I can't. I wish I could help but I've already started painting (right now I'm in between rain showers and family gigs).

Once I'm done with the hatch (in a couple of weeks), I can take some shots for you. So, stay tuned.

It does tend to show the boo boo's/filler more, like where the plywood was joined, if the flush cutting bit got a bit hungry and covering screws:

You've got me intrigued, MKE.
I just sent an email to "Professor E Poxy" with a few questions I have. I'm going to be ready for the exterior finish within the next two weeks. If Alluthane is all the multitude of pages he has claim it is, you may have stumbled onto something really good here. Thanks for sharing the info. I do appreciate it.

You're welcome. I hope you get the answers you need, whether that means you get aluthane or not!

I was under the impression that this was a final coat. I guess I was wrong.

Interesting, I'll be watching....

I don't know how great of a test subject I will be, as I now have SIX coats of product on top of the two coats of aluthane:

3 coats of a paint that I later didn't like
1 coat of primer, and
2 coats of the paint I'm going with now.

(I should hope that I'll be sealed up!)

But...when I do the hatch and the remaining front piece, it'll probably just be two coats of paint on the two coats of aluthane.

No offense, MKE, but I'm glad I waited til you tested it before I bought any. :worship:

We all owe you a great vote of thanks for taking one on the chin for all of us. I just hope the additional coats of paint give you the finish you were hoping for. Sorry it didn't turn out as you'd hoped it would. Keep the faith.

So I went out this evening to work on installing my front window...I noticed in my last coat of paint that I must have been getting anxious (sloppy?) and left a bit of excess paint around the edge of the window hole. Of course it hardened so I decided to sand it off to allow the window to lie flat.

Well, I not only sanded off the gray/silver paint but the primer coat underneath and the three layers of bad paint and got down to the aluthane. To me, that's good news in the sense that I wasn't able to get down to bare wood, and that the aluthane stayed (soaked INTO the wood and not just stayed on top).

I'm thinking I'll still be a good test subject, as I have the hatch and another piece yet to do, it's just that I should really be sealed on the body (with all those extra coats).

Any updates on the aluthane?

Sorry for the delayed response, this is my "off-season"

I'm not sure I can add much. I put it up for the winter, under a tarp in a temp. garage structure. It still hasn't seen it's official maiden voyage, a night of rain or anything like that. I'm about 90% done, with the hatch remaining. It "appears" to be good but I don't have any real world tests yet.

All the best!

I like this experiment.
We'll have to you up next time we need a guinea pig....er.... lab rat....er.... helper!

So you did three coats?
How much material/gallons was that?
Now.... what do these cost?!?

Finally, what are your plans at the end?
Leave it alone? Put a clear layer over top?
Or will you become upset (like the 2 layers of paint) and paint another product over top of it, having a cross section like this?

Ha! I don't think it will ever look like that cross-section. My wife will never let me. Seriously, I'm happy with what I've got now, and I think, if I had the time for the camper, would focus it elsewhere (rather than changing the color again).

I purchased a gallon, and put on two coats. I think I still have just under 25%...whatever it is, it's more than enough to get the rest of the pieces of the hatch done.

I believe it cost about $100, w/an additional $15 for shipping. Very easy application.

I hadn't thought about the "final" coat, as I was just considering it "finished" with the two coats of quality exterior paint (kind of like a house).

Now that I've got the doors, window, roof vent, and drip rail above the front window in, I think it might be difficult to do any clear coating. I could be wrong though.
