LED Utility Light

Postby bdosborn » Mon Jan 25, 2010 2:38 pm

After browsing Chorizon's Hill-Country Hauler Build I noticed he had a picture of wlooper89s tongue box with a light in it, which I thought was a pretty good idea.

I'd decided that all my lights in this trailer would be LED so I came up with an easy LED utility light.

I started with a cheap LED strip I got from eBay ($5.99 including shipping) and a piece of wood with a 1/4" dado in it.

I attached it under the lid. The LEDs are held in by friction only (no glue) so I can swap them out if the burn out.

I needed a switch so I tucked one away in the corner. I still need to add some kind of cover over the wires and terminal strip:

The LEDs are too blue for my taste to read by (so I wouldn't use them inside the trailer) but they work for a utility light. They don't use much juice and they're waterproof :

Then I realized I needed a light for the generator control panel so I added a little surface mount LED powered by the same switch:

I'm jealous...

Would you design an O.W.W. for me, with all the fixings? ;)

Sure! But I figure I've got another couple of years messing around with this one before I could get to it...

Both are great installs. Not as good, but a Puck Lite mounted underneath the lid will work. I got the kind that rotates and tilts and can focus it on my hitch when needed. The drawback is replacing batteries, but they last reasonably well. The Puck-Lite came three to a package. I put one high on each sidewall to add lighting on back shelves. Almost never figured out where to put the third one; and then the tongue box came to mind. The adhesive has held it okay when traveling. It is a push-turnon; so clearance directly underneath is needed when the lid is closed.
