Size of Pop-up frame?

Postby Michele » Wed Dec 26, 2007 8:26 pm

I found an add for someone selling a pop up camper for $50. The owner wasn't able to give me much information about it. She was only able to tell me that it is a 1989 Starcraft but nothing about the dimensions. The camper is still on the trailer so I don't know if I will be able to see the frame. I was wondering if anyone that is familar with tearing down pop-ups could take a guess as to what size the frame might be. :worship:

Ya can't buy the reciever and the safety chains for $50,00 Bucks. Most pop ups are 5x10 or 6x12 why grumble. A frame will cost you $350.00 to $500.00 bucks. Ya might get some goodies inside GO FOR IT. If it don't meet your criteria build one for the masses , sell it and build the chosen one. I guarantee you what you learn will be well worth your time.

Somebody is wispering in your ear.........

I've done a few drawings of (larger) teardrops to go on pop-up frames and one thing to note is that most of them are quite wide and it can be quite hard (read, nearly impossible) to narrow them down.

So if you want a 78" or so wide trailer, the pop-up frame is ideal, but it you want to adapt it to carry a 4ft or 5ft wide teardrop body, you need to be good with a welder.

Mine is on an older Starcraft, probably early '70's. The outside dimensions of the frame were 6'-3" wide by 9'-10" long.
It wasn't very hard to remove everything that looks like a pop-up once I made the decision to go TTT.

Jack

PS: My frame was exposed all the way around so measurements were easy to get before hand.

Thanks for the advise. I purchased the camper. The frame is 6'3 X 13. It is perfect for what I want to build, a standie similar to the Puffin. I still can't believe they sold it for $50. They paid $350 for it 3 months ago. They thought they were going to repair it but they decided they didn't want to deal with it. Looks like there is a ton of stuff that I can use.

The Puffin was our inspiration also.
Steve did a great job of documenting his build.

Michele, what a superb value buy! Those interior fittings are worth plenty more than $50 without the frame.

Here is a PDF of the Widget design modified to fit on a pop-up frame which may give some ideas:

It's in better shape then the one I picked up for $200.00

And I think I got a good deal since all I really wanted was the frame....and when I tore it down thats all I could use. And it's a torsion axle, which I was going to go with if I had to build my own frame.

Wow Michele, what a great deal. If that looks as nice as that looks in pictures I think I might leave as much of it where it is as I could.

You can see what Dave and Kathleen did here
http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=17755

they left most of the sides in tact while I had to build mine from the bottom up.

Ours was already torn down but the resulting frame bed was 6'4" wide and almost 8' long. It made a great TD/TTT. ;)

It only took one day of demo to reduce this pop-up to nothing but a plywood floor. The floor and the sides are rotten, full of roaches, and not worth using. However, I will be keeping the sink, frig, cushions, cabinet doors and lots of hardware.

Boy does that look familiar.

I fully intended to rebuild mine when I bought it. It was an early 70's I think and had a swing-out galley, called a Swinger 6.
The lift system was cable operated with a winch and had to be repaired just to get it open. We were able to use it once then started disassembly to rebuild the top, water soaked and must have weighed 500 pounds by itself. The more siding that I took off the worse it got. Rotted sides, ends and floor. That's when it became a flatbed trailer. I kept all the electrics, they all worked.

I did grind off the back bumper mounts and if (when) I put the bumper back on I'll fit it up tight to the rear frame rail.
That side plate (curb side) that the step hangs on I ground off also. I brought my sides down over the frame, I thought it gave a more proportional look.

Good luck

In case anyone is interested, this is what a pop-up frame looks like once the camper is removed.

Several years ago we bought a pop up for our kids to use when the grandkids were little. Well, they used it very little and have just let it sit and, (I am sure, fall apart). Well, to make a long story short, we are going to get it back and see what the damage is and what we might be able to build on it. It was a nice pop up and I really am disgusted with them for not using it. They like to camp but want all the comforts of home I am sure. It had a lot of the comforts when new. Oh well, now we can play with it and try our hand at building a TD. I am excited to see what we can do.

Hey Packerz, I've been looking at your rig, and I'm wondering how it was pulling it behind your Jeep? Does it have much of an effect on MPG, given it is about 12"-18" wider?
