Of course you can! There aren't any ramifications of widening a trailer to build OVER the chassis. You might have to cut wheel wells, but it's no big deal. This is being discussed here:

I'm making a 6'6" wide x 12' long trailer on a 4x8 chassis. The frame and floor are rock-solid.
I am using a HF 4x8 bolt-together. I've added a midsection to the tongue, to replace the A-frame with one more like this:

I used the same diameter square tubing, so I could reuse the hitch mount. I'll see if I can get some pics for you after work...
I have no welder, and VERY limited tools or space. My "workshop" is a parking garage with no power outlets, so everything is hand-hacked or done using battery-operated tools. My whole toolkit is worth under $300; you don't need anything too fancy (tools or parts on the trailer) to get the job done right. It just takes time and a lot of thought.
