Fickle Mind - Another Trailer question

Postby d_lairson » Wed Jan 27, 2010 11:34 am

My fickle mind (and a night spent looking at the design library) has gotten me interested in the Lightweight New Cub. I'm wondering if I can adapt it to make it 60 inch wide to hold a queen size bed. I know on paper it's simply a matter of pushing out each side six inches, but would weaken the frame any? I was also wondering if I can make that trailer a partial bolt together frame. I'm pretty sure that I would have to weld the tongue member to the axle support beam, but the rest could be bolted, probably...

Of course you can! There aren't any ramifications of widening a trailer to build OVER the chassis. You might have to cut wheel wells, but it's no big deal. This is being discussed here: http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=30959

I'm making a 6'6" wide x 12' long trailer on a 4x8 chassis. The frame and floor are rock-solid.

I am using a HF 4x8 bolt-together. I've added a midsection to the tongue, to replace the A-frame with one more like this:

Code: Select all
         |
         |
        /|\
      /  |  \
    /    |    \

I used the same diameter square tubing, so I could reuse the hitch mount. I'll see if I can get some pics for you after work...

I have no welder, and VERY limited tools or space. My "workshop" is a parking garage with no power outlets, so everything is hand-hacked or done using battery-operated tools. My whole toolkit is worth under $300; you don't need anything too fancy (tools or parts on the trailer) to get the job done right. It just takes time and a lot of thought.

It is a strange teardrop effect but if you currently sleep in a queen , a full size will seem just as large in a teardrop.

Your subconscious mind has no fear of falling out of bed and you will use all of the mattress so a full has as much room as your queen at home.

I know it sounds weird but it is true.

Ya, but Bob you and I both share a some what horizontally challenged build having retread the spare tire just a bit. And the prospect of having less room than a crib width wise when there are two just does not appeal at all.
