I've got several Aladdins and some other wick and wick/mantle types for in the house....glass bodied lamps. All of the outdoor stuff like the Dietz and the older RR lanterns that I've got usually aren't all that tight and will leak or are kind of a mess to work with. I'm talking about the straight wick types. Doug

I have a couple of cheap Dietz lanterns. One sits in the house and another hangs from my redneck lantern holder on my reverse TD. It helps me find my TD, but doesn't blind my neighbors :) They are great for low light stuff, but they do leak if not kept in the upright position! I use odorless charcoal lighter fluid in them and they don't smell strong at all.

I've used the real cheapo ones filled with tiki oil to help keep bugs away. I recently purchased an old one to convert to LED. It should be showing up in the next couple days.

I've had three 'lanterns' and they all sucked. if you carry them in the trailer that bounces around all the kerosene or whatever you use ends up in the bucket I carry them in. Then I found this gem at Walmart. Here's an Amazon link to it. It's inexpensive, easy to load, produces a nice light, is well made, and doesn't leak! Also be sure to use a paraffin lamp oil. It won't smoke the glass up at all. A bit pricier but worth it and it doesn't stink. Google 'metropolitan hurricane lamp'.

This bugger is only $18

It does look nice doesn't it. It's gone about 15,000 miles now. (one 12,000 mile trip) and I've still got it and it's not broken, and it's still working well.

I got this today, but I'm going to convert it to LED with a frosted globe.

Kirk:

I should have said in the original post, that's the before and after pics. The lantern was painted ugly gold so I sandblasted it.
