Hi Mark,
I was just reading threads since I am preparing to start my build. What are these "front running lights" you mentioned? Are these outside the cabin as in headlights? It's just a term I had not run into in the other threads...just want to make sure I did not miss anything. Thanks

Melvin,
Great build. I'm in Lacey, WA. Next week I am driving to California to work on my TD with my brother.

Being up here in the NW, I'm concerned about the wood getting damaged with all our wet weather. What kind of stain / sealant did you use?

Also at the beginning of you build, you mentioned a small gap between the frame and your floor...did you shim that up? I am using a HF Tailer as well.

Any advice would be helpful. If you are around and have time, I would like to see a home built HF Teardrop first hand. Let me know and thanks.

The amber safety lights that go on the side near the front (outside). Red ones go near the back. People that build foam filled walls can easily run wires through the wall gaps, but us solid walled simpletons only have wiring space over the front wall/roof/hatch. So you have the option of putting the running lights down on the frame and wiring through the frame, or, I guess, daylighting the wire at the front wall edge near where you plan to mount the running light, then routing a shallow wire groove back to where the wire comes our of the fixture. I think I am going to try the latter.

Hope that makes sense. A picture would make it more obvious.

Oh, and not sure what Melvin did, but I stacked washers between my floor sheet and the trailer frame where there were gaps, which is in the front and back. Otherwise your bolts will pull your your floor sheet into a bow.

Hi Melvin,
Your build looks great ! I really like it.

I hope you don't mind a couple questions ...

Where did you get the round window from ?
and where did you get your aluminum trim, esp the rain gutter moulding ?
TIA,
tac

I used a stain they recommended at McClendons hardware. It is supposed to be the stain WA uses in all of their state parks to protect their wood. I had it out this last memorial day and it beads the water really well. I will post a pic of the stain when I get home from work so you will know what to buy.

The gap I did not shim. By the time this thing has been put together I cant believe the gap even bothered me. There is no way it will effect anything. You can fill the gap with a construction adhesive or a foam.

I am in Tacoma and you are more then welcome to visit my tear and talk ideas with me. Im glad to help.

The round windows are from a Pinto Cruisin Wagon. I purchased the pair from ebay for 80 dollars. You can also check out the pinto forum to see if you can score a pair.

Here is where I got my trim. http://www.ebay.com/itm/RV-TEARDROP-TRA ... 5890f6c6a3

The guy on ebay who I bought my trim from also sold me all my door handles and hinges. He is super good to work with. As for the other 2 inch aluminum trim I have. I bought it at Home depot and formed it to fit my needs. The bottom trim that separates the trailer from the wood was made from 4 foot aluminum strait rulers and flipped around =) alot cheaper that way.

The rain gutters were made from the L door molding in the ebay link I provided. I just happened to have enough scrap to make them.

The window cover was something I made to stop the window from breaking on the road. I made 4 studs and used wing nuts to keep it on. Comes off real easy that way with no tools. ;)
