I recently bought this one on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Weber-121020-Go-A ... eber+grill
I haven't used it yet but it looks to be a solid, well made grill.

Mike,
If a high heat sear is what you're trying to achieve a Weber or a kamado is the way to go.

I'd recommend lump charcoal over briquettes. It burns hotter and cleaner - no fillers. That said, if you want to use briquettes, the Kingsford competition briquettes and Stubbs natural briquettes are pretty good.

I am close to pulling the trigger on some GrillGrates for high temp sears. I've read many good reviews on them.

Like Asianflava said, this can become an addiction. In addition to the Akorn I have a barrel smoker and two Weber "gassers".

Take care,
Tom

Being as I have 4 Weber charcoal Kettles and 2 Weber gas grills on my back patio you can probably tell what I would recommend. :R Weber actually re-introduced an older model this year called the Jumbo Joe. It is portable like the Smokey Joe, but has an 18.5" grill so you can do it up right. That is if you are looking for something that is portable. Otherwise the new Weber Performer is a nice grill. My oldest Weber Kettle was made in 1969. They last and they are made in the USA.

The original forum is actually: http://www.greeneggers.com

eggheadforums used to send you there, and the mods ran it for years. Corporate decided to go it alone for some reason and started their own at that address. The original mods got the archive and put it at greeneggers. Many of the same people, probably many of the same posts, I don't really go to egghead though.

Yeah the price of admission isn't cheap, that's why I said the most any "ceramic cooker" others are cheaper but they also won't rust. There are steel kamados, but I don't know about their rust resistance. I wanted to get one for camping, but ended up finding a smaller used egg on Craigslist. There was a guy next to me at a BBQ with a WSM. He unexpectedly ran out of charcoal because it was so cold and windy. He needed to get one of those blankets. My egg kept chugging along.

When I could actually afford a good steak cut........

While your charcoal is still in the chimney set your cast iron skillet on it carefully and super heat it. Now sear the steaks to seal in all that goodness.

I indirect cook mine by placing a stainless steel mixing bowl in the center of the grill with about a cup or so of water in it. This bowl is placed under the grate in the center of the grill and then make an outer ring of the hot coals. This allows the steak to cook thru without burning and you can still slide them to the outer area for grill marking and a hot flash finish.

Damn now I am hungry

I bought one a few years ago. It works great for hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken.

Which one is easier to dump ashes out of? And how do you dump the ashes? Is there a trap door underneath or something?

I'm not sure on the Big Green Egg but for a Weber One Touch is very easy to clean it has a set of arms on the bottom of the grill to clean out ash into a ash catcher pot that is a 1 inch turn comes loose to dispose of ash. My parents have had a Weber kettle grill for well over 20 years. They just got a Weber Performer grill that has the Propane lighter for charcoal it lights the coal just as easy as using a charcoal chimney.

A decision has been made... Since the Kamado can Sear at 700 degrees, Bake at 500 degrees, Grill at 350 degrees, and smoke at 200 degrees, I've decided to try that first.

P.S. Does anyone have a good ebook/pdf that tells me how to use this thing?

You're gonna live it! Our egg has never let me down. I'm s bit sad though that "bubba keg" who became "big steel keg" then looks like defunct....they had a real nice liking rig....even had a 2 inch receiver adapter to allow it to be hauled an a towing receiver. :(. That would ha been AWESOME attached to my TD :(

Love the versatility. Hate lugging it around :(

Forgot. There are forums for the BGE. Anything you find there should be applicable. Except perhaps for accessories.
