Newbie from Utah

Postby bevaroni » Sun Mar 24, 2013 11:36 pm

I love camping. I tent camp with my family and scouts, and enjoy backpacking. I confess that pulling or driving a camper or trailer has never excited me. I feel that hauling all that hardware around with you would defeated the purpose of being away from home. Really, what is the point of going to the mountains just to sit in your camper and watch DVDs and TV.

A few days ago I stumbled across a Youtube video that truly intrigued me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74Lm7dAx15M. I can see a teardrop trailer facilitating our tent camping. Those of us in the family that would like a more at home bed could have it and the rest of us could still sleep in tents. A ready made cooking area with only a lift of a hatch would also be great. The teardrop would be a base stations to our outdoor adventures.

I can't wait to start building my own Teardrop. I've been pouring over all the resources from the group and am learning a lot. I do have a few initial questions that some of you may help me with:
    1. Where do you store your spare tire for the trailer?
    2. Any ideas for beefing up the wimpy wheels on a harbor freight trailer?

When I get past the planning stages I'll be sure to share my do it yourself build.

Thanks

Welcome! I was concerned about the cheapie tires that came with my trailer (Northern Tool) too, so I upgraded my tires to 13" car tires:

I put car tires on since they more than met the weight requirement of the trailer and I felt they would give a softer ride than hard walled trailer tires.

I store my spare tire in my tow vehicle. I kept the cheapie trailer tires for a spare. They are smaller and take up less room. Besides, I figured they would hold up long enough to get me somewhere I can get the regular tire fixed.

Welcome. sounds like me a few years ago camping and scouting and backpacking. You will love the site. The people are great and can provide lots of information. just like life, there are lots of ways to do things and ideas on the subjects and no one is right or wrong, just different. As each TD and TTT is different, one from the other they have names and decorated too in special ways. that is half the fun. Enjoy your build and getting to know the the different builds.

Welcome to the fun.

Don't have a spare tire. Thinking about getting a wheel adapter that would allow me to use the TV (tow vehicle) spare.

Welcome to the forum. I just finished my TD a couple of weeks ago. If you would like to see one up close you are welcome to contact me. I used the 1700 lb rated HF trailer. The wheels on this trailer are stronger. 5 hole and larger diameter.

I live in Highland.

Welcome to the madness,,,,,glad to see more utahns getting into teardropping,,,,,still haven't seen any on the road or in campsites but at least they're out there....my spare tire just sits in the bed of the truck,,,,the 12 inch tires will be replaced with 13 inch soon, but I've had no problems so far. The squared HF fenders got to go......round ones would look better. You will enjoy camping so much more with a teardrop....I know I do....TC
If you see my harley on a trailer,,,,call the police cause it's being stolen...
