Dinette table top

Postby mustangcats » Sun Apr 07, 2013 10:45 pm

I have torn out the pull out bed frame I had made and and I'm building a more useful dinette that will convert to a bed. What is the best material to use for the table top? I was thinking about using a good grade of 1" plywood. The span between the 2 dinette seats is 25" and I was wondering if the plywood could span that distance and support the weight when converted to a bed. I need to make sure the table top will stay flat and not bow over time.

One inch is probably overkill, but it would certainly work. Rather than buy expensive one inch ply, you can double up some half inch. If you want to save a couple of pounds, you could run two inch wide strips of the half inch material around the bottom of the table rather than two, full sized pieces of the half inch. That's what I do when building counter tops. Gets rid of all those narrow rip cuts that stack up in the shop.

when I had my scamp the table converted into a bed I believe it was about 1/2 inch or so thick.
at my local RV store I bought 4 pieces of metal door stiffener they come in 6' lengths.
after cutting two of them to length I screwed them to the bottom of the table
they took away my fear of table collapsing under the weight of two people.
The other two pieces I used to stiffen up the shower door.
