Super Newb!!

Postby Desert-rat » Thu Apr 11, 2013 4:51 pm

Hi folks. I see there are a handful of my deserty neighbors here on the site already.
I'm looking at building a tear because finding anything else light enough to pull behind my mighty Mitsubishi Outback and its beefy 4 cylinders has been a challenge.
was looking at pop up trailers, but starting out a lot of them are just too heavy and cost too darn much.

Looking at the campster design as I think it will look swanky behind my beast, and if i dont build it with the dinette (who wants to eat inside anyway?) that should knock out a good bit of weight and have room for me, the hubby and the two rugrats

Here's to hopin'!

Sounds good!, and Welcome!
You might want to check out the "Foamie" section if you really want to go lightweight. My second one will probably be mostly foam.

So what part of CA? You should head on up to the dam gathering in 3 weeks for a chance to see over a hundred tears all in one place!

Isn’t that a suburb of Victorville, and once upon a time didn't Roy Rogers lived? ;)

Welcome to the forums D rat.

We use to fly C-130 into a grass air strip in the High Desert in CA can’t remember the name of the place
but out in the middle of nowhere. The strangest thing was there was the Killer Bed and Breakfast there
that was always booked up. I remember seeing an old monastery around there as well.

GL on your build and your planes to take over the world.

Welcome aboard, Desert rat. I too used to fly into Apple Valley in a 4 place private airplane and there was a van pick us up and drive us up to the Roy Rogers layout, where we always enjoyed a great middle-of-the-desert meal. I wonder if that place is still there. If I remember, his horse Trigger, was stuffed and mounted in his museum nearby. I can assure you, it is possible to build a TD that weighs less then 500 lbs that can be pulled easily behind a 4 banger. I have have over 30,000 miles on mine already, with my 4 banger Camry and 4 banger Chevy Cruze. Good luck.

Welcome D-Rat. Love your avatar. I remember the days of sitting with kids and watching Pinky and The Brain after school. Laughed till I hurt. Anyway, if you're looking for real light, check out the section on Foamies. That's how I built mine and I couldn't be happier.

I have extensively studied the Road Foamie.

so far (of course plans change on the wind) it will be a square tubing frame contoured to all the lovely curves (the joys of being married to a fabricator)
1" XPS ridgid foam as the meat. hardboard wainscotting for the inner finish and skinned in painted aluminum naturally getting the outter skin wont happen until tax time next year :money:

Today we're going out to Nowhere to look at our base frame. :worship:

After our free trailer had been scrapped, some choice words and frustration, being 'given' an axle only then to be told later 'Oh by the way I wanted money for it'
being flaked on another trailer and just about to say screw it all together a sweet lil' Bertha of a trailer jumped out at me on Craigslist Monday morning.
to which the hubby said 'call now!'

Step 1 ladies and gents :applause:
