Window trim ring screws

Postby mrslamb » Sun Apr 14, 2013 2:55 pm

I am getting readyto install my front window and purchased the window on eBay.

http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem ... 2240819104

The window came with a trim ring but no screws does anyone have any suggestions for which screws to use?

Thanks!

Commercially built trailers use self drilling Tek screws for that type of window. I would lay out a pattern, drill and countersink the holes and use oval head screws. Sheet metal screws will work just fine going into the wood framing and are, usually, easier to find than the typical flathead wood screws that the Borg carries

I would highly recommend NOT using tech-tip screws ... depending on the application, you may not have that much room between the groove you screw into and the outside frame of the window, and you may end up running that tech-tip through the face frame. I use #8x1/2" self-tapping pan-head machine screws ... if the wall is a little thicker than the clamp-ring, bump the length by 1/8". A lot really depends on the wall thickness and how the main window frame is made ... there are a lot of variables between window mfgs. and what works for one may not work for another.

Good Luck, and as always ...

Just to be clear, I was not recommending the use of Tek screws, just saying that a lot of manufacturers use them. They are a quick and dirty way to screw things together. Along with drywall screws, they are the most misused fasteners out there.

Ok, on a related note, I have Hehr windows that came without trim rings. I intend to make wooden trim rings by using some 4/4 stock that started out as a waterbed frame, cutting it into 3" wide strips, and putting a 1 x 1 rabbit on one edge. I'll use a compass and my jig saw to make the radiused corners and attach those to the straight pieces with 1/4" dowel joints.
When I install the window, I am aiming for that little "fin" around the edge back from the exterior frame, right? If anyone has pictures of exactly where the screws go, and exactly what I'm supposed to screw into, I'd really appreciate seeing those. Thanks. :)

I didn't use trim rings. I screwed the window directly into the door.
