fan reverse

Postby Rainier70 » Sun Apr 28, 2013 7:47 pm

I have searched like crazy, but haven't really come up with a solid answer on the reversible fans. If you have a vent fan, which way do you use it the most, pulling air in or pushing it out? For what situations?

Is the reverse important to you? Why?

Thanks!

I've got the reversing Fantastic Fan but I only use it one way to blow air out. I raise the windows in my doors to provide the air flow.

I have two Antec three speed computer case fans over the bed and they blow in, they are normally on low or medium. Very quiet and very low power draw. They also function in concert with the AC to keep air circulating.

I don't have A/C, only the Fantastic Fan, because I don't have electricity a lot of times where I camp. I could have bought a 5000 btu AC unit for less than the reversing model Fantastic Fan, but I love it.

I usually use it blowing out, pulling a breeze through the windows. We have curtains on the windows, but sometimes will roll them up to keep from blocking the breeze. I have to roll them up if I set the fan blowing in, because it will slap the curtains shut against the windows if I don't.

We camped during the hottest part of summer once when the night temperature only dropped to about 89 degrees. We had the fan on high blowing in, and it was bearable, but not really comfortable. (I was wishing for the A/C then!)

I would definitely buy the In/Out model Fantastic Fan again. I cringed when I bought it initially, but it is probably the best money I spent on the project, comfortwise.

Festus, AC can be done fairly easily and with out too much expense. I did a write up of the setup we have that works very well.

I have always used a simple circulating fan hung in front of an open window inside the tear. In extremely hot camping I draw in the cool night air and allow it to pass on thru to exhaust thru the other window.

I later built the barn and added an intake exhaust fan to draw air in or out thru a vent placed under the gambrel overhangs. The O2Kool fan I used was 12 volt and by simply reversing the polarity the little fans will run backwards. The reversed flow is slightly less than the forward flow because of the blade design but is still give a decent breeze. I wired a double pole double throw switch as the reversing switch.

I usually have my fantastic fan blowing out, drawing air in through the open windows. But when I have the convertible top removed, the fan works much better blowing in.

Thanks for the responses. It sounds like reverse would be nice to have.

I blow air out with the fan, so fresh air comes in through the side windows.

A thermostat is nice too. As is gets cooler at night, the fan runs less and less. You don't wake up in the middle of the night freezing !

I'm planning on using a couple computer fans wired to a switch for in and out. I really like the thermostats idea!
