My idea - could use some help.

Postby qwerty11 » Fri May 03, 2013 10:41 pm

My wonderful idea that I hope will work:

I plan to build a camper which is 6'8" x 10'. Height will probably be 6' in the rear slopping up to 7' in the front. Said camper will be built to slide onto a much larger trailer via a winch.

Appears camper should be built on two runners such as treated 4x4s?

Camper will need to be a four season camper so insulated floor, walls, and ceiling. So I'm thinking plywood above the runners, 2x3s, and then plywood as underlayment for the floor. How does this sound? Would the plywood need to be treated?

Walls and ceiling are planned to be framed up using 2x3's. Outside covered with 1/4' ply and then FRP.

How does this sound? Any changes/recommendations?

----------

Another thing I wondered about, will this guy hold up going 70 mph down the interstate?

Thanks for the help!

If you're planning on winching it up onto a trailer, I guess weight isn't an issue unless you're hand cranking, but if you need to spare some weight I'd suggest you try looking at building a Foamie

I never thought about the foamie. If its easier to build then my current idea I may go that way. I will
Be using an electric winch to pull it up on the trailer, so weight isn't really a problem though. It will only occasionally be pulled off/on the trailer.

One of my original ideas, back when I was considering a removable cabin, was to use pneumatic casters under the cabin.

When full of air, they would hold the frame off the ground (an inch or so) and would allow for easy movement with a simple push. Let the air out, and they let the frame rest on whatever is underneath it.

Since that time, however, I've decided that the simplicity of having a dedicated trailer chassis is worth the expense (which honestly isn't very much). In fact, by the time you add the cost of tie downs and other needed hardware for a removable cabin, it may be cheaper.

My mini barn business caused me to move many a barn. I had a call one day and a fellow wanted to move a barn to a lot one house down and on the next street. I told him I would look and see what I could do. It was a big heavy 12 x 16 barn and well built.Luckily it was across his neighbors lot (a good friend of his) and directly into the target lot. No fences no ditches just flat level ground. I told him $100.00 and he was happy. SO..... out comes four schedule 80 4" pvc pipes and a 4x4 and a large concrete block. levered it up and placed a pipe in and worked it to to near the middle and dropped one near the front end. this let the building roll. My helper and I needed a bit more horsepower so the customer and his neighbor jumped in and 8 minutes later by placing the pipes ahead of the barn as we traveled we finally arrived. Why have I rambled on about this. I often thought of doing the same thing as you are planning. I would build a short deck as the home dock and when I wanted it on the trailer do as I described. Jack up a bit and place the pipes to roll on and the same to roll off.

Oh the customer.... he felt a bit cheated since he could have done it so easily until I mentioned that the four 10' PVC pipes were an investment ( long ago) of just under $60.00 and I rolled his neighbors lawn for free. That got a laugh!
