GlenL Sequoia Build in Foam

Postby CampsALot » Fri May 17, 2013 7:01 pm

Hi
I'll try and document my foam Sequoia here as things progress.

The project so far...

2x2x1/8 tube frame with 1/4x2 flat-bar reinforcements in the A frame joints and 1/8x2 flat bar doublers welded to the
tubes behind the axle. Plans show regular spring suspension but I found a good deal on the torsion axle.
I added the doublers behind the axle to stiffen the rear part of the frame. Without the spread out mounting of regular
springs/hangers, I felt the rear might be too 'springy'

Plans call for a ply floor with traditional wood frame and aluminum skin construction.
The wooden walls add to the rigidity of the structure.
I created a box construction floor to create a rigid base for the foam walls.
The floor is bolted to the frame in sixteen spots. Its rigid!!

Test fitting the walls.
I wanted to glue them on tonight but the temp is 6'C (44'F). :NC This is normally the first camping weekend around here but I think the campfires might freeze this year !!
I'm using epoxy to join walls to the floor and don't want to chance the cold messing things up.

Thanks for looking.

Your frame looks to be very light weight, and your reinforcements sound like they are well planned.

Welcome to the forum! Sounds like you are blurring the lines between Foamie and a std. build. Leads me to believe that we have a lot in common.

Can you share some more details on where you are headed with your build, how you intend to use it, is it a slouchy (overall dimensions, etc.)?

Thanks for sharing and keep the pic's coming. :worship:

Thanks for the welcome

KCStudly,

The Sequoia is a 'slouchy'. It's 5',1" inside and 60" wide.
I have a Jeep Patriot so I want to stay under 1500 lbs loaded.

This design is used mostly like a teardrop. The galley is easier to use from the outside.
The bed converts to a small couch and with the table, it's usable inside in bad weather.
It also has a small separate toilet room.

I'm hoping that with 2" foam walls and roof, and the insulated floor, I might be able to do a little winter camping. Thats always been on my 'Why not? Give it a try!!" list :)

That's a variation I don't think I have seen yet, with the galley accessible thru the side ala carnival vendor.

Sounds like a plan! :applause:

That is a well thought out design. I like the dual use galley. I looked at the Glen-L designs back when I was dreaming of building a boat. Even their larger trailers are well designed. Graduating them to modern materials will work well.

Hi,
I found some used windows today.
Horizontal sliders, Dual pane, screens and trim rings.
Paid $110 each. Not the cheapest but ALOT less expensive than new.

(Windows are standing on end in pic)

Also, I've started on the interior partitions.

Looks like you are off on a great start. I am building the frame now. Will see in a few days how warped it is. LOL

Some more done this week...

Been working on the galley and cabinets.
I didn't get as much done this week as I wanted though, I hate when work gets in the way of my hobbies... :D

Looking real good. Glad to see that you are using foam for the cabinet faces too.

Is that paking tape I see on the wardrobe? I find packing tape a very useful tool in building foamies....

Wow, that's coming along fast!

Are you going to try and skin that all in situ, or is that just a mock-up and you are planning to blow it back apart and pre-skin it?

Ghcoe, I use the tape to hold things in place until the glue dries.

KC, it will be skinned as is. It's time to add a few wooden mounts, wiring, and a water line before I skin the interior.
The front and rear walls will be pre skinned as well as the ceiling.

Update July 1st

Postby CampsALot » Mon Jul 01, 2013 11:06 am

Working on covering the interior with fabric.
This is harder than I thought.

My wife came out to inspect and asked why all the edges of the fabric, (old sheets), was so jagged.
I said it was from cutting pieces out.
She laughs, takes the scissors and cuts a 1/4 inch nick at the edge and rips the sheet in a perfect straight line !!!

WHO KNEW ???

I was away for a couple of weeks for work, but have made decent progress this weekend.
