Well the monday update actually has little to report on the caboose HOWEVER....

If you want to see my new shop...........

Image
chubby's new home out of the blistering sun and the rain and snow. It will be a great place to rebuild his badly deteriorated outer shell. This pic is the right rear of the shop

Image
here is the left rear

Image

Have about 25 nice steelcase desk chairs to throw away per the landloard. No it ain't happenin they will get shampooed and put in a big yard sale. If you look close you will see nice folding chairs, melamine coated shelving, Dry erase board, and tripod easle that I can use at the dutch oven seminar at the cra. Hell I might take a few of the heavy duty five legged chairs and doo this.........

Image

Neat huh. I shoved 1800# chubby 1/2 way across the shop with one hand.

Here are 3 of the 4 kids in their new home. The chuckwagon is in the lot here at work and will be added to the group this evening after work.

In the foreground of this picture are 4 rolls of brand new short nap semi shag ivory carpet. ( The caboose might get carpet short term until I get the parquett floor in)

There are also 2 units of 2x4 ceiling tiles that will make a great bulletin board.

Dump run hell I am gonna use most of this good junque for the shop or sell it. The best part is the landloard gave me a months free rent to clean it out and I will. He will never recognize it when its recycled.

You are just the guy to find a creative use for all that stuff. :)

Sorry I had to bail on the Spring Gathering. You don't know how bad I wanted to be there. Daughter's health issues just kept us home. Hope to get my reservations in for CRA this week. :worship:

See ya.

She;s doing MUCH better. Thanks for asking. I know it was the right decision and don't regret it for a second. But, it was disappointing because of all the work I did getting the "Patrol Box" campable.

What happened?:
Told my housing did not meet size standards in this county

Mr. Henry 5/2/13

The Unified Zoning Ordinance does not allow citizens of our County to live full time in RVs or travel trailers, unless they are located in RV parks that have been allowed to have full time residents. To my knowledge there is only one of these in our County.
Mobile homes or trailers as they were called are allowed only in mobile home parks or areas that they are zoned for, but they must have a State tag identifying them as a mobile home that can be used as a residence.
Back to your structure, it is neither a RV or a travel trailer or a mobile home nor does it meet the minimum requirements set by the State for single family residences which is 750 sq. ft.
Those Counties that do not follow the State mandated building regulations are subject to having their charter dissolved and are subject to suite by the State. I for one do not want my department dissolved as my position along with 5 other hard working professional County employee would no doubt be eliminated. And most important, the State mandated jobs of permitting and inspection that protect the citizens of our County in all areas of the building process would also go by the wayside. Loosing 17 years as a devoted County employee for allowing someone to live in a space not recognized as adequate by State law is not a path I would choose to take.
You are welcome to your own opinion, just as I am, but my position and responsibility dictate I follow the State and local Ordinances.
If I were you, I would continue to pursue a place somewhere outside of Tippecanoe County for your structure,

Ken Brown
Tippecanoe County Building Commissioner
20 North 3rd Street
Lafayette, IN 47901
765-423-9225

Bob 5/20/13

Cute little homes, but then again cottage and cabins relate to temporary living, not full time 365 days a year.
I did not mean to sound sarcastic, I only wanted to impress on you that these little structures have many issues that would present problems with code compliance.
Without getting into the specifics and not actually having inspected the structure I wanted you to know that strict compliance with the IRC would be all but impossible without variances from the state.
The single family residential code is quite specific about what has to take place both inside and outside and the home and how much space is required for the living area, bedrooms and bath fixtures.
Ive been in many RVs and motor homes that were considered very large but none of them complied with what a single family home requires.
If this structure was connected to a larger structure then you may meet the minimum 750 sq ft total but there are still issues with the requirements above, footings and attachment and all other sections of the IRC.
I am a very positive up beat person who has always been willing to listen to what new ideas are proposed, I am just trying to make you see that it may be unrealistic to think you could use this structure
as a single family residence in Tippecanoe County.

Ken Brown
Tippecanoe County Building Commissioner
20 North 3rd Street
Lafayette, IN 47901

Why do you believe you are being discriminated against?:
DISABILITY.... too poor for a normal home I chose to build a tiny house with solar capabilities , rain water harvesting, and composting toilet. I have been told it has to have 750 square feet of floorspace to be livable. Alas it is but 120 sq ft.

Who do you believe discriminated against you?:
First Name: state of Indiana
Last Name: tippecanoe county IN
Organization: county
Address: see above

Where did the alleged act of discrimination occur?:
Address: letter above
City: lafayette In
State: IN
Zip: 47905

When did the last act of discrimination occur?: 05/02/2013

Is the alleged discrimination continuous or on going?: Yes

The County commissioners have a copy of above. I would like to be a fly on that office wall talking about the crazy in the tiny caboose

Best of luck. :worship:

Other than "designated" officials, it might help to disscuss your situation with elected officials who will soon be running for office again. They are usually trying to improve their public image at reelection time, thus more amenable to listen.

Also find out who your elected officials opponents are. They would appreciate any mud to sling they can get.

Good luck.

Good Luck Bob! I hope someone finally realizes that as time goes by things change. Maybe the time has come for local governments to see there are non standard movements in alternate housing out there. Maybe you can attach the caboose to a yurt for additional living space. That will really mess them up.

Can you give me the statute code. I am now quite confused as Mr. Brown advised me to simply choose another county. These alternate counties would be in state and should be subject to the same statute code.

The excerpt.......

You are welcome to your own opinion, just as I am, but my position and responsibility dictate I follow the State and local Ordinances.

If I were you, I would continue to pursue a place somewhere outside of Tippecanoe County for your structure,

He has already ruled my tiny caboose house is not an RV, not a mobile home, or a cottage . As it is on wheels and mobile it is obviously not a home of conventional nature. I have spent thousands of dollars to build this small home and would like to some day live in it legally in my home state. The States of Oregon and Washington accept and support the tiny home concept. As I currently am losing my home of 24 years thanks to the economic downturn. This coupled with the loss of my wife has forced me to take this path. With savings exhausted and my social security of about $300 and change a week I simply must pare down. I have invited Mr. Brown to inspect the tiny house as it has not been drywalled yet allowing him to see the care and construction techniques that he has deemed inadequate. It current set 3 miles out of his county and he is unwilling to entertain my invitation as it is not in his juristiction and I am currently aware he doesn't want it in his county.I am tempted to park it in his office parking lot for his perusal. I am linking you to my build journal in hopes you can see the thought and care I have taken in this build. I have 18 years in the lumber business and am 13 years in my position as a construction estimator. Prior industrial maintainance positions made me a good plumber and electritian so no corners were cut. Here is the link happy reading viewtopic.php?f=48&t=47804

Thank you.

Mr. Henry - The Indiana Residential Code does apply to your structure, but the Unified Zoning Ordinance is not part of the state code.
If you have questions about the Indiana Residential Code, please feel free to e-mail me.

I got busy and put a new deck on my flat bed trailer. Gas prices being what they are I thought a giant payload of junk per trip to my new storage building would be a great idea.

Even installed two 16 gallon water tanks.....

On a lighter note test slept the caboose last night. Just snuggled in under a big warm comforter and enjoyed listening to the rain on the roof. Had the under counter CD player playing soft and low in the background. I felt very homey
