scored some cedar

Postby 2bits » Sat Aug 17, 2013 5:48 pm

A friend of mine has a tree service and cut down a huge cedar (Don't ask me what the owner was thinking!) He said they were such nice pieces that he hated to cut it up and put it by the street and he had two huge 10 foot long pieces if I wanted them. I came over and helped him load a couple loads of brush and then we very carefully (so as not to get crushed) loaded these gargantuan pieces into the trailer along with some other smaller pieces.

The original idea was to use them as posts for the deck cover that I am going to put on the shop but they are so huge, they might be too huge! So I haven't decided what to do with them. I was thinking standing them up at the entrance to my driveway, or maybe have them milled into planks to build some furniture out of. Other ideas?

If all else fails, they'll make great firewood!

I cut aromatic Cedar for kindling; about 10" long and split about 1/2" x 1/2".
I use it as the small kindling to start larger pieces in the wood stove, and to give as gifts (bundles) to friends whe have fireplaces, it looks really nice as a display, smells great displayed and while burning, and is generally "match light".

Most boat builders would use this light wood. As far as that goes I'm using Cedar
as blocks in the foamy. Its approximately the same weight as the foam.

Thomas,

For Texas grown trees, those are some pretty big cedars!

While the wood is beautiful the knots will drive you crazy if you try to work it for paneling or furniture.

I'd be tempted to cut it into planks and use it as siding on one elevation of your out buildings. Or, you could cut some slices and use them as "stepping stones" along your trail.

Take care,
Tom

Totem poles. Find someone that does those chainsaw carvings to do them up for you. Or giant tiki carvings.

Just hide them behind your clothes in the closet to keep the bugs away.
