Your solution sounds good. One thing that I decided was to make the bed as comfy as I could within my budget. I may still add some thin memory foam on top. Sleeping on my 6" cushions at CRA was really lovely. Would the cushions in the first foamy work?

Those were commercial cushions that went with the Jayco when we sold it ... That was waaay too Big for me to take care of properly (dangerous for the Old guy ) ... all gone ...
Still looking around at alternatives... good thing we have lots of pillows (decorative and bed) , that’s a start  Also looking for a cargo net to string between the rib holes for storing those things ^ ...overhead or on a sidewall .. Lots of possibilities there. The FS is pretty BIG inside and if we can arrange it all right , it will be very comfortable without being claustrophobic (the reason the little foamie' was immediately dismissed by the wife ) ... Thinking now “Less is More” ... ;)

The little foamie just has some carpet scraps now and a couple crates of camping goodies , and a fan .... pretty much empty , yet still dry as toast inside , despite all the rain, storms, hail we’ve had over the past several years... Foam does last , and without having to do anything to it ... 8)
The FS is now Dry inside ... but still has that new paint smell ... Thinking more about a vent system ... and so much more
All just a "work in progress” , one thing at a time ...

Went to the Fabric store and got the Burlap for the front top inside ... Then to HF next door for some 3 ton AL jack stands for the trailer ...They’re Light and I hope tall enough to do the job ... or back they go ...
And it’s raining again ... :rainy: Could be worse eh ? ...

GPW, what size bed are you making with the foam? We're comparatively short so a double works for us on vacation. Seems I should be able to get that for under $100 & then cut it into the two sizes I need. Just curious what you are going for as I would have thought even a queen size could be well under $200. Am sure you've looked here but thought I'd mention it... you know, just in case:
http://www.usafoam.com/mattress/conventional.html

The HD36-R FOAM in 6" queen size is $137. (Personally, I'm going for the Super Soft but I know I'm the exception in this.)

Have you considered an air mattress? Some of them are rather comfy & with a thin-ish foam topper you may come out cheaper than one large chunk of foam. The advantage is the ease of getting it into & out of the camper. Well, to me at least that's a consideration. Giant chunks of 6" foam are not that easy to move around & I'm a bit... um... lazy!

Just leave the other cooler in the galley bay and put that beautiful Coleman on the other side. No problem with space on that side.

Air beds don't last as long as foam and you wouldn't want to use them for a long time, but for the occasionally used FS they might be just the ticket. Once you figure out how hard you like them, they are pretty comfy. Once it's deflated, it can be stored in a tote with the rest of the bedding...and they certainly meet the 'Thrifty' mandate.

GPW, if that's a vintage steel Coleman cooler, there are people who would pay good $$$ for it. I wish we still had the one my dad used on our camping trips

GPW,

One thing to reconsider is, if you are going to sleep on the floor on
a mattress [of sorts] or not. I would only do so if there was
absolutely no other choice. Sleeping comfort would be paramount
for me in an' evac' situation.

I would advocate for making some kind of platform now - so that the
mattress/sleeping surface is at about chair height. It wouldn't have
to be elaborate [a minimal 1x or 2x frame and some 1/2-3/4 ply or such
and could just be temporary, for this year, now], but it would be infinitely
more comfortable and useful. Plus, you could store items under it in
some of those covered plastic bins.

The FS is "relatively" larger in size, but it won't seem that way if both of you
and what stuff you take are all on the floor together. Even if the PU
could take some of the stuff for 'storage', a platform with organized
[of sorts] storage bins underneath would be much easier to use and
would be much, much, more convenient.

'Just thinking of both of your "older advanced bones" - so to speak. Mine
would be screaming for mercy, flat on the floor. A fast easy platform
would at least help muffle them some for me.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

Actually the King size mattress we have is as firm as sleeping on the floor ... just like the Chevy commercial ... “Like a Rock “ ... :o The floor may be softer ...
Airbeds are out , we have a Cat .. :frightened: “Meow" ... sssssssssssssssssss !!!
Platforms ... Thought about that , a cot would do for me ... Worried about the extra weight of a platform , or the original idea of a trundle bed... ... :NC Until I get the tire clearance situation under control ( new suspension parts and spacers , or little FAT tires )... I hesitate to add any more weight at the moment ... The FS is still pretty light for it’s size ... I can still pull it across my gravel drive by hand (with the dolly)

The wife says wait on the bed (that’s the Word !!!) ... neither of us are fussy sleepers .... I can sleep in a Bus Station at rush hour ...

The Coleman isn’t all steel , has a plastic inside and bottom :( ... can’t be that old eh .... got it when my FIL passed away ... When I was a kid (some time ago) my Dad had a Coca Cola cooler that was all metal ... long gone ...

Going to try to add the burlap today , if it’s not too Rainy ... :NC Got a fresh gallon of TB2 waiting to do the job ...

So It PASSED inspection... 8)

Bigger ice chest, isn't the FS just a big ice chest LOL, that said you could make a section of that into an ice chest, maybe a tub in the bottom to hold the ice, and remove to drain/dump, and jut store beverages in that ice chest, or beverages and items that don't NEED refrigeration, but we like to keep cool or cold, then the removable manufactured cooler for the meats and stuff that NEEDS to stay cold.

On the bed, not sure if this is too big, but I have a futon with a light black frame, they are on sale at Walmart and the like for $100 pretty often (frame and mattress), use as a couch by day, and bed by night, I did this in an enclosed trailer for a few years to haul my jeep places and camp inside at night. Worked well as a couch in the basement when not in use in the "camper"

SJ, that futon seems like a good idea ... I can’t build anything for that ...

Putting up the burlap now ... not as easy as I thought ...had to resort to doing sections at a time and using the heat gun to speed dry the TB2 ..
