Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

It's absolute nonsense you are talking !!

First my truck has 20" tires vs 15" on most cars .....
A 4 x 4 is much higher then a standard.
So of course the smaller tire car will bottom out first !!

2nd you can get a torsion with -45 deg negative which has a a lot more clearance
And there are no springs to get busted on any rocks.

I personally see no EVIDENCE to support your conclusion ?

Show me something like a road test by Road & Track ? Anything ?
When I see serious off road trailers, they all have shocks & air bags :D :D

OTTCT, Howdy;

I'm not much of one for doing all the extra large print with different colors
and the host of emoticons. I'll simply ask that you read and take your time
while you do so that you can understand what is written.

I mentioned that I had talked with a Wells Cargo Dealer and he was the one
that directed me towards the spring axels for the rough surfaces I wanted to frequent.
Wells Cargo don't use springs they stick with torsion in all 3 levels of their trailers. So,
he was directing me away from his business and to someone else.

As for Airstreams, can't beat'em for traveling on paved roads, but you don't see very
many out in the boondocks, a few, but not many. Most of your boondockers will have
spring suspensions, a few with shocks, again, not that many.

As far as my research goes, I probably can't find all the websites again, nor would I care to waste
my time simply to have you go into another tirade of large garish letters and emoticons.

I have not looked at carmates trailers but from their web site I don't see anything thats worth $5000. I only paid $5600 for our all aluminum 7 x 16 vee nose with 6' extra height, torsion bars, screen door and two baggage doors. My two previous 6 x 12 vees were bought for $2100 and $2600 with options similar to yours. I think you need to keep looking.

Here was a my advice to another poster:
"If your near a mfg, you can save a bundle by picking it up at the factory. You still have to go thru a dealer like "cardinalsales.homestead.com" who will do it a for small fee/deposit, than you pay the factory the rest when you pick it up. Cardinal can do it for trailers made in Indiana, Texas, Utah, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Arizona and Georgia. The state of Georgia gives their trailer factories a tax break so they are always cheaper. You get one with the options you want, like a screen door, screwless exterior or two tone. It takes 4-5 weeks to build, so plan ahead. Some factories like RNR, where I bought my 7x 16, sell direct."

I don't really have any patience for people to talk utter nonsense ....Sorry about that
Only a fool who does not know the difference would compare a GA trailer for $3500
Is the same as a CarMate for $6,000

I own both trailers ...... I know the difference .... So EXCUSE ME .... When I get ticked off
I have been to both factories LARK & CarMate , night & day does not describe the difference

The same goes for folks who claim that $200 leaf spring are superior to torsion at $500
Prove it to me I wanna educate myself armed with the facts & nothing but the facts ...... Not opinions !!

I don't have a problem if a man only wants to use Leaf Springs & wouldn't use a torsion if his life depended on it.
But 99.99999% that guy has never seen the difference & is stuck in his own little world because he can't afford better.

And I feel the same if someone wants to claim his Winnibago = Prevost bus , utter nonsense !!!
Since its all in small print I hope you get my point ???

Owning a CarMate .... I can tell you their web site sucks ..... Compared to their quality.
What is it R&R i think ? makes a great alum trailer - if one likes alum trailers.
I would tell people to go there For their alum trailer.

Personally I prefer the wood walls & I have seen 20+ year old CarMates they hold up just fine
They also have built over 100,000 trailers .....

If money was no object in my fantasy world ...... I would get Featherlite to build my $100,000 trailer

Well my new trailer is LOOK made in Az. It has steel studs and a good frame work and yes it cost $3500 out the door and I like the craftsman ship of it they did everything I ask for. Carmate seems to be over priced for me for what you get. At my age this trailer will still be standing when they shovel dirt on top of me.

Bc toys

If I wanted something to camp in weekends or to haul some junk once in a while
My $3,500 Ga lark 7 x 16 would be perfectly fine too.

There are folks who buy cheap plastic type travel trailers & there are serious Airstreams buyers.
And I guess I'm finding out lots of folks - don't wanna see the difference :D

I tell folks right up front if you want something cheap - Go to Ga like I did the first time around,
The next time around then go to CarMate...... If your not happy with what you got in Ga
since CarMate is working 24/7 & is 8 weeks behind - I guess they have plenty of happy customers,
willing to pay what some " OR MANY" here see as overpriced trailers.

I found CarMate on this form & to date have not found one single guy who bitches he got some crap or was overcharged
Not one single one, because everybody here bitches about some brand of trailer.
But as far as I know there are zero complaints about CarMate.

Cheers Jerry

Howdy All;

First of all I like to apologize to the OP for the direction this thread is going.
Wasn't my intent when I asked about springs vs. Torsion...
So. I'm not going to continue this here. I'll correspond with OTTCT by PM.

I am the originator of this topic post and regret the way it seemed to have taken a turn for the worse.
I appreciate all inputs where posters wanted to give me their opinions and share the facts for the many aspects of converting a CT to a toy carrying and camping vehicle.

I am on the post for the purpose of learning what to buy and I have tried to make that clear in this site. I am learning from my own research and from the many replies shared by many forum members. I tend to ask a lot of questions.

But I think this latest string of comments in my post has gone to far and to go forward, I am going to stop using this post title to ask questions about trailers and only ask those that address issues to converting my trailer once I order and receive one. And I will continue to contribute to fellow forum users as I do follow-up replies to their posts.

I will continue to follow topics on what brand to buy, how big to make the trailers and what options such as types of axles and so forth, but I will not bore the forum readers with questions which come from my taking so long to actually place the order.

When I get my trailer and start to make my custom changes, I will start with a fresh "Topic".

Thanks to all for their help so far!
Bob
