Aw, too bad. "The big pink" was an easy thread to spot in the list of new posts!!!

Pictures to follow... but not much to see, it just looks white.

But it's not pink anymore, so I changed the thread title. I don't have a name for it yet.

I am thinking about using aluminum roof paint for the top... it seeemed like it would work OK. It's oil based, should soak into the canvas well, and I think the color would help with climate/ moisure control inside.
Thoughts or comments are always welcome !

kudzu wrote:OK, so according to the MSDS it does have aluminum (20%) in it. Can't speak to Mary's comment about it rubbing off. Rustoleum seems to claim it won't with this quote, "This commercial-quality finish maintains consistent, corrosion-resistant color—despite the elements." Would be worth researching if you haven't already. You'd want to at least make a test panel first, no?

Looks like a good color to me. Have you decided on the color for the side panels?

Might still chalk off some. Almost all silver paints do, but the automotive industry fixed that with clear coat. I would give it a try and if it looks like it is going to have problems, just scuff it, give it another coat, then put a clear coat over it. If you are not too concerned about up front cost, just clear coat it right from the beginning. Of course, this assumes that the paint doesn't say something like "not recommended with clear coats" on the label.

Sometimes it’s easier to just scuff the surface lightly and repaint the Al every several years ... Clear coats will eventually go bad too in the Sun ... then you have to pretty much sand them off to repaint ... :o

I finished primering the door last night and made a test panel with and without primer to test the aluminum paint on. Hopefully I can do that tonight.

I put an extra coat of primer around the windows to make it a little smoother where they will seal.
Now I need to look and see what to use to seal and hold the windows in. (I do have inside trim rings) I'm going to call a local windshield place and see what they use.
I won't be installing the windows until I paint the final coat, and still haven't picked colors yet. I'm gonna let my wife make that decision. :D

Kudzu,
Thank you for lookin' up the MSDS on the paint !

and I guess I was wrong, this thing does have a name ...
Yep, it's "The Big Pink " :)

Tac, we used 3M 5200 for the FS windows .... Really Good Stuff !!! Windows will never come out ... No leaks whatsoever... but it does take a while to fully cure ...

I made a test panel of canvas glued to foam scraps, and painted half of it with Gripper.
111682

After it dried overnight, I painted the aluminum paint over it. It's kinda hard to see in the picture, but it really pops when painted over the white.
111681

So that meant I needed to paint the top first. I was pretty much out of Gripper, so I went looking in my leftover paint cans and found this :

Severe Weather ? Exterior ? White ? Perfect !!

I had just enough in the can to paint the entire roof, so now the TD has a good coat of Gripper on both sides, and this stuff on the top.
Yep, ready for paint !

Unfortunately I'm not gonna be able to work on the TD for a week or so ...

I hope you paint it just like your avatar. Love the colors. Wish I could help you with your questions about aluminum paint. I guess part of how long it lasts depends on how long it stays in the sun. If you have a storage place indoors or if you get a cover for it, I wouldn't worry about it and use the Rustoleum stuff. Easy for me to say though, it's not mine... and I'm lucky enough to park mine in the garage. 8) 8) 8)

Well,
I'm back... I've been gone out of state tending to family stuff.
So I haven't had a chance to do anything on the TD. My LS (lovely spouse) did pick out the colors, so I should be able to start painting this week .
I will be going with the aluminum paint on top with the yellow and bluish greenish paint on the sides.
I do have a garage but don't know if I'll be keeping it inside once it's painted. I still have to install the vent, and it might not clear through the garage door ...

Thanks for all the kind words Kudzu, GPW and Mel !
You guys have been my inspiration :D

Tac, how about a vent on the side up near the top , like the Old Timers did ? ... Those roof vents always seem to have problems clearing garage doors ... Just a little vent is all that’s necessary , not those Large flip tops that now seem to be so popular .. I have to vent mine (rounded roof ) so a regular vent FT won’t work ... But it will be easy to add an Old Timer vent ... ( a hole , a screen , and a simple cover ) Which will be repeated on the floor (floor vent) to allow best air circulation

112242
a four inch soffit vent on both sides works fine for me, the gutter ring was made using two hole saws

112243
I glued the screen on the inside with RTV, I made the RTV bead bigger on the bottom so even if some water ran into the soffit vent, it wouldn't run into the trailer.
At night the rope light glows out through the vent, acting as a porch light. I'm very light sensitive so the rope light is perfect as it gives no glare from one spot.

I'd like some input, please !

My current choices for painting the outside are :

a) Oil based gloss - "Porch and floor paint"

b) Latex semi-gloss - "Storm coat"

Both of these are exterior Valspar brand from Lo*es. I'm thinking that I would prefer oil based, but then I'm also thinking that the semi-gloss would help "hide" the canvas texture ...

Thoughts ?
comments ?

the higher gloss shows more defects but I went with a gloss finish anyway. Just my personal preference
