Can someone recommend a propane powered camping stove for me

Postby mikeschn » Tue Oct 01, 2013 3:32 pm

Can someone recommend a propane powered camping stove for me?

We have a stainless steel thing that we bought at some big box store, and the top grill moves all over the place. So it's time to replace it.

I'd like it if if put out lots of btus too!

Thoughts? Suggestions? No, not a coleman gas stove, already got one of those!

Thanks,

Mike...

I picked up a propane conversion for my three burner Coleman stove. Works good, and I can use the fuel tank as a backup.

Around $20, if I remember right.

We have an older Coleman propane that we are still using, but I have looked at this one...

I scratched my head long and hard on what stove to put in my new tear. I settled on a Primus Firehole 100. Good reviews, but the biggee was that the hose runs out the bottom/back. You can see it sitting in my unfinished galley. If you look below in the shadow you can see the hose attached to a 1 pound propane bottle. That bottle is now nesting in a large drawer that I've completed. The stove itself is bolted to a slider shelf. There's a slot in the slider for the hose. (and there are nests for two other bottles behind the water jug) The box to the right of the stove is for cooking utensils.

As far as camp stoves go, this one is bigger than some. If I were building a 4' wide tear, I might go with something smaller but not having to deal with the pipe bottle-fixture that comes on most camp stoves is a big deal for me.

I bought my CampChef Everest stove on Amazon.com. LOVE IT! This thing throws out 20,000 BTUs from each burner, and gets the food/coffee on the table fast! As mentioned in some of the Amazon reviews, it's a bit tricky finding the simmer level. Bought the hose extension and use the smaller propane tank Bob bought for me. (Those big 20 pounders are hell on my carpel tunneled wrists). I made a padded carrying bag for it and it travels behind my cooler in the lower left galley area.

A skillet is not a camp stove. Maybe that is a reason you have so much trouble boiling water!!

True, but a propane skillet definitely cuts to the chase, since (at least for me) 90% of my cooking is in a skillet or a pot. Think of it as a propane griddle with sides. Camped once with a campsite with electricity and a friend brought along an electric skillet; beyond convenient when cooking for 4 or 5 people. A propane skillet would be equally useful.
Just an option to consider!

We recently replaced a 10 year old grill stove from coleman with a camp chef ranger II blind stove http://lghttp.16485.nexcesscdn.net/8083 ... /BS40C.jpg

We did a lot of comparison and this one had a higher btu rating, but could still turn down to a low flame, and can fit my big cast iron skillet pus another pan on it with no problem. We have been using it for 2 months, happy so far. Amazon for $74.

I boil water and other things as much as cook in my cast iron 14" skillet. Propane skillet would be just in the way. Plus my stove is off to the side, not in my teat. I don't want to cook directly in my galley, my wood is too pretty to grease up!

I do a lot of cooking on my two burner propane camp stove with skillets of various sizes, chicken fryers, pots of various sizes, tea kettles for hot water and frequently two items at the same time. No way a propane or electric skillet will be anywhere near as useful. The original post was asking for recommendations for a propane camp stove.

Mike,

You may want to figure out what BTU range you really need based on the altitude. I have Coleman, Camp Chef (2), Primus, and SMEV stoves. The old Coleman has about 8,000 btu burners and works fine up to about 5000 ft. I usually camp at 7,000 ft or higher so I found a portable Camp Chef stove (now discontinued) that has 15K btu burners. They now have portable units with either 10K burners or 20K (Everest HO model, about $89 at Amazon) burners. I also have a larger Camp Chef with dual 30K burners which are very powerful but difficult to simmer with. I also use a single 80K btu burner for boiling lots of water. You can buy a 210,000 btu KAB4 Banjo burner for about $100.

On the other hand, my SMEV cooktop is designed for more careful cooking and has burners of 3700 and 5900 btus which are great for lower altitude simmering, frying and cooking.

Greg

PS -

I've been gone for several years, but I'm back now and no, the trailer isn't done, yet.
