Protecting your TD from theft, TD insurance?

Postby corvusallen » Fri Oct 04, 2013 9:54 pm

My teardrop is currently at my father's house while we're building it... but I'm planning on moving it to my detached garage once it is finshed.

I am a bit concerned, though, because recently someone broke in and stole 3 bikes from the garage. They broke through a padlock, and broke through a bike cable lock.

Since then we've had a security alarm installed, including a sensor on the garage... but I'm still worried.

What measures can be taken to prevent someone from stealing the teardrop?

Is there some way to buy insurance for a home made camper?

I took pictures of mine, gave them to my Broker, told him the value of it and he got me insurance against fire, theft, and collision. Cost me $90.00 a year.

Comprehensive insurance (inc. fire, theft, vandalism) for my trailer cost me about $60 a year. I lock the hitch and sometimes chain a chock to one of the wheels with a lock, but......

Like mentioned, a completed teardrop can be insured. I'd think that until it is licensed and titled, it would fall under your home owners policy if something happened to it while in the garage, but I could be wrong. Once completed/ titled and licensed, it will take an independent policy to cover it against theft/ damage. Talk to your insurance agent. Your auto policy will cover you if you do damage to someone else while towing, but won't cover any damage to it or theft without it's own policy.

For me...I never leave a trailer in a position at the house without a vehicle blocking it in, to minimize it being "snatched". Thing is, if someone wants it, they will probably do what it takes to get it. Just try to minimize the potential for someone to take it. Locks can be cut easily but they will discourage the lazy criminal. I've got 3 trailers now. Only 1 currently has coverage, the new one will be covered until I sell it. I just baby and keep the tear out of view as it has no coverage anymore. Hasn't for a couple of years now.

At any rate...have a conversation with your insurance agent. Where you live and who your carrier is may affect your policies. Doug

When I store mine after it's finished, I will also be chocking it up in the garage and removing both wheels. These will then go in the back of my 4x4 along with all the nuts. The TD will be insured, I just dont want to have to build another one while some scumbags might be out enjoying it or selling it. The harder I make it to be removed, the greater the probability of it staying where I put it. Even though a TD is easy to identify for being what it is here in Australia, there is one helluva area for it to be easily "lost" in.

Kody,
Ours is insured with RACWA.
A good deal, happy with them.
We do not have any real precautions to prevent theft as it is a rather rare event in our part of Oz. Sounds as though you have some baddies up your way.

Take it easy.

Hi RD,
Things have started to become rather bad up here in these past months. There have been lots of break-in's and a lot of people have been badly assaulted in both R'ton and in Yeppoon. We live about 1 klm from the highway and 10 klms from Yeppoon. We hear the cop sirens now much more frequently than ever before. Yeppoon was once a small and beautiful quiet tourist town. Times are changing and not for the better. It's an enormous blessing to live on 26 acres at the end of our road as extremely few strangers ever venture down to our place. Whenever they do, Kody (our GSD in photo), lets us know long before the strangers can see the house. It's still the greatest place to live regardless.

Kody,

Yeah places change over time, sometimes for the better but usually the reverse applies.
A while since I have been in the Yeppoon area, 10 years ago at least.
I have spent some time above the Tropic of Capricorn over the years but prefer the more moderate climes these days.
Up to Kalgoorlie for a few days next week, a change from the coast.
Take it easy.
