trailer mods

Postby hugh » Thu Oct 17, 2013 7:17 pm

I built my off road capable trailer 4 years ago. It was designed to go on fairly extreme off road trails and it did that quite well. However time changes things like prioritys and vehicles. we now have 3 grand kids and will take them camping a couple of times a year. Not all at once though :) . Anyway I have decided to recycle my trailer and make it a bit larger. Currently its 8' long and interior width and height are approx 5'3". It is very stoutly built and well insulated but as mentioned a bit small. So in the next couple weeks these are the tentative plans. It is coming on winter here but we do have a heated garage.
1. Strip the trailer down to the frame, saving the door and the 5 windows plus all the hard stryofoam insulation pieces.
2.The wheels sit outside the body, that will be changed to having the body enclosing the wheels which will allow an interior width of 6'. The trailer had a rear kick up which let it go over 3' almost vertical ledges, which is no longer needed. Plus the spare is mounted to the front, remove that, move the front wall ahead approx 10" and extend the rear another 14" and get a 10' long trailer that is 6' wide inside.
3. it sits on 15" rims with 10 1/2" by 31" tires now. I will get a set of either 13 or 14" rims but stick with automotive radials. This will allow the trailer to be rebuilt with a bit more interior height, aiming for at least 5' 10". By TTT standards it is now a -slouchy :D and I would like a -standie.
4. The passenger side is where the door is located and the window was placed too close to the door, you have to be very careful entering with the window open. it is right at face height so that will be centered a bit more.
5.Right now it has a 2 person chair built against the back wall that slides to form a bed. There is an overhead shelf along the ceiling at the back but it has rarely been used so it goes. I,ve never been happy with the bed but it does allow either of us to get up in the night to exit through the one door built at the front side. I,m thinking of putting in a 6' long seat along both sides. Since space is a consideration they won,t be wide enough to be super comfortable but should suffice. Like most people here we spend a majority of our time outside anyway. When the wife and I camp one side can be used to fill in the middle gap giving us a 6' wide by 6' long bed.
6. If one grand kid comes along, he or she can sleep on the floor between us on an air mattress. i will also frame the wall so a bunk can be placed crossways along the back wall if it is ever necessary.
7. This leaves 4' of usable space up front. I,m thinking a small counter top with a wash basin and storage above for clothes, towels, etc and below for a water jug, stove, etc. When I say small i mean say 2' long along the front drivers side wall and 3' long across the front with a width of about 1 1/2'.
8. Right now the roof is from a starcraft pop up roof I got at auction for $12. It worked great and never leaked a drop but will be to small. I need to either locate a lenght of aluminum or possibly a chunk of steel roofing if it doesnt look too goofy. :worship: I do want the wife to feel Ok about using the trailer.
9. As it sits now the trailer is equipped with a 12 V rv battery and 12 V lights and is wired for 110 also and it has a stereo. All this will stay but will get upgraded.
Any way thats the plan, and any comments are both welcome and appreciated, i never would have built the trailer in the first place without getting to discover this forum and the people and all the ideas generated here.

It seems a shame to tear the trailer down as it looks pretty cool. Are you sure it wouldn't make sense to sell it and use the proceeds to start your new build?

I agree. It seems that by selling you'd pay off a lot more of your next project, AND someone else would get a cool trailer instead of scrapping all that material, AND if you wanted you could start the new build while you still have the old trailer and you wouldn't be without a trailer during your new build.

Add my third in agreement to not tear down your trailer. It seems like it's worth (much) more to sell, whenever you're ready to do so, than it's saved parts value for a (re-)newed build.

Adding I glanced at your album. You built your own frame for this one. So it seems you have the experience, skill and tools to make another one optimized to your new wants/needs/desire for your grand kid ready trailer. You also mention using different size wheels and tires. Together IMNSHO that tilts the scale more toward selling your current trailer now or sometime later. And to start the new trailer from scratch...maybe with fewer design compromises...that may be needed to reuse parts from your current trailer.

Good advice. I posted it on a local site for KIJIJI and set a price of $2000. While I don,t really expect any replies due the time of year , you never know. So over the next few weeks that leaves time to check out others builds here for good ideas.

Post it on this site under for sale thread. I am sure you can sell it for that price.

Grant Whipp's web site has a for sale page you might consider using The Teardrops.net Classified Ads Page

expeditionportal.com is focused on off roaders. "Expedition campers and trailers for sale. Camper conversions, slide-in campers, adventure trailers, etc." is a very active for sale sub-forum for people who may want to buy your kind of off road camper.

Your asking price seems like a bargain. It may be (considerably) under priced.
Here's a commercially built off road teardrop trailer AT Teardrop Trailer-Phoenix, AZ $24,500 It's over twelve times your asking price. :) :D

I agree, it should go quick at that price.
