CPES...Where to buy and how much?

Postby tscarbroughdc » Fri Oct 25, 2013 11:53 am

Where is a good place to buy CPES and how much do I need? Pint? Quart? Gallon?

Also where can I buy butyl tape for the seams?

Thanks!

I bought my CPES online at Jamestown Distributors (Google them). I bought the two quart kit but it was way too much. You could probably get by with the two pint kit for most builds. They have a warm and cold type so check into how and when you will be applying.
Got my butyl tape from Frank Bear.

Wow. Thanks for the input!!! I bought a whole gallon from RotDoctor!!!! I'm guessing I have too much?!?!

How do I mix it? 1 to 1?

Do I brush it on or roll it on?

I am planning on putting three coats on. But after I got it I really doubt that I needed to use it on my marine grade plywood!!! After I got it, I was thinking that I needed to use it on the Luan and then paint the whole camper. In that case, a pint would would do it!

Any tips on mixing and applying it would really help. I'm going to try and get it started tomorrow.

Mix according to the instructions. At the very make sure you apply it in a well ventilated area. If you have a chemical respirator use it. The fumes are noxious.

+1 on what Tom said. You should have instructions with the components. Mine was from Smith and Co. and it mixed 1:1. I used the polyethylene (frosted) type plastic cups for mixing. I marked a 3 oz line on each of two cups and used them to measure equal parts of the two components, A and B. I then poured them into a third cup for mixing. I used a rectangular 6X8" shallow tupperware container to hold the mix while I rolled it on with a 4" foam roller (you could probably use the small plastic roller pans). You will need a good quality foam roller since the mix will eventually melt the cheaper rollers and the foam will swell and start breaking up as you apply. You could brush it on too but I found the roller to be much quicker. CPES has a fairly long pot life so you could mix a lot more than I did at one time. Also, like Tom said, make sure you have good ventilation or wear a respirator.

Here is what I'm applying to my teardrop inside my garage around 60 degrees.

OK, that explains it. You should be good with the cold weather formula at 60 degrees. Here is a link to everything you need to know about applying your CPES:
