Randy , I believe it’s the left over stuff from the concrete mixing process ... rocks , sand and cement. Once it’s spread out and rained on it gets pretty hard ... and it’s really Thrifty ... $150 for 12 yards delivered ... waay enough for what I need to do .... waaay more than I want to spread by myself ... :frightened: Used this stuff on my driveway when I first built the house (15 years now ) ands it’s still fine , no touch ups required as yet ... Driveway was river sand base (dredged from the Miss. river , 2 blocks away , but not by me of course... ) , highway mat ( heavy woven plastic), and washout over that ... The neighbors used limestone and no mat (prettier) , but theirs has to be re-done most every years .... about 4-5 times as much $ as this stuff :o ... I never was much one for “appearance” , just what worked ... ;) Not trying to impress anyone in the woods with my driveway .
It was my slab contractor that put me on to this , taking me to his house , showing me his 25 year old driveway .... still solid ... no ruts ... so I did the same ... :D So Glad i did ... 8)

Seems to work Good for me ....

After several hours of back breaking shoveling and raking , got the inside of the shed (floor ) done , the outside floor , and the low spot in the driveway that collected water and all those little foam bits from the build ... buried now ... Super Tired !!! :phew: Going to get a shower , lay down on the reclining platform that faces the constellation Andromeda , and have a few Cold ones ... ...

Ps. I’m too Old for this kind of "stuff” ... Good thing it was Cool today 74F , a month ago this would have been a Miserable task ... :sweaty:

Ps. those “rocks" you see are big chunks of Concrete ... They come in the mix , and this batch had a lot of them , so I used them as a “border" in the back of the shed to prevent the “washout” from washing out ... Got some left over ... may construct a Pyramid ...

I wish I could get that stuff here. It's about $450 a load for road gravel. Most of that being trucking costs. I use geo textile cloth under it so it holds up well. Main issue is muddy tires picking up the top layer and rolling off with it.

Great Job!! and after distributing a little gravel last week I know you did a great job. I could not imagine doing it with a shovel My tractor comes in handy for that kind of work. :D Hows the paper work comming? I will still register it in GA for you if you want too. The offer is still there. your table is neat. I think I am going to make a similar one for mine .

Bogo , something I found helpful was to liberally sprinkle Cement on to ( Portland cement powder in the bag ) Once it rains on it , it turn pretty hard .... Cement is cheap too .. Just what worked for me ... ;)
All the other alternatives here are Expensive too ... Limestone is Ridiculous !!! .... my neighbor paid $800 for a 12 yard truck :o ... Gravel is about half that , so your prices aren’t far out of line ... The lowly washout more suited my budget and seemed to work the best over time ... Cement trucks and even the 40 ton crane (when the tree fell on the house last year) failed to put a dent in it ... As soon as the crane pulled off the driveway onto the grass , it sunk up to it’s axle ... :frightened:

Mary , still thinking about that ...

Here we can get lime from the sugar factory. Lots of dairies and other feed lots get it. Works pretty good but tracks on the feet. Best to leave an area for the crap to scuff off your shoes.

I guess it’s all where you live and what you can get ... We even tried Oyster shells , which work well (and is cheap and plentiful here ) , but is rough on tires ...and flip flops (sharp edges ) ... :frightened:

Many years ago , the Celotex plant would give people free driveway coverings , just for the asking (as much as you wanted ) .... little strips , left over from their manufacturing shingles , but those were found to contain Asbestos and that process was halted and the plant closed (before the law suits started ) ... Later , many developed Asbestos related health problems ... so Free wasn’t so good ... :frightened:

Around here, the cheap stuff is the asphalt they grind off before repaving a road. If there is petromat in it, it can't be recycled back into road making material, so they will give it away for what it costs to have a truck bring it to you. Left in the sun, if will heat up and bond itself back together over a few years.

up here it is called 'roadbed', or road prep material. Less concrete, more varied size of stone.

The difficulty too was my driveway is 350’ long , and had to be done on a budget ... The FS sits on the very end , by the house , on all that plus some real gravel that somehow was left over from the wife’s "edging project “ (don’t ask ) .. just the tow jacks (HF) in the back , and it’s pretty stable , but not quite Level ... That part elevated above ground level so water quickly runs off ... no mosquito pools underneath .. The only thing wer have to worry about now is those darn mud daubers, who insist on making mud nests on the bottom of the floor ..... we’ll see how they like the black nasty stuff there now ... :NC

The only hurdle left is getting this trailer LEGAL ... getting the paperwork signed , and we’ll go from there ... Can’t wait to get the FS on the hwy ... see how it pulls ...

74 is 'cool'? :?

sorry, cognitive fugue going on here... we just had our first 'hard' frost of the season this morning.

Looks great! I bet it was still a bunch of hot sweaty work even at that 'cool' temperature.

Up here near the sub base we get people from all over the country coming and going with their base assignments. Funny to see the squids... um, submariners... running around in the winter wearing shorts and T-shirts when there is a foot of snow on the ground. :?

I like it a little cooler than most people, but there are always variations to a theme.
