Tim aka 48Dodger in Northern California...

Postby 48Dodger » Thu Oct 24, 2013 9:14 pm

My name is Tim and I enjoy 1948-53 Dodge Trucks. I build them up, restore them, race one at the Bonneville Saltflats, and hold a party on my ranch every year called "The Clements Tailgate BBQ". Guys come from all over to show off their trucks and meet guys from the forum where we chat. Lately the topic of Teardrop Trailers has come up, and they seem to be a perfect match for our 1/2 ton trucks. I really look forward to learning more about what you guys have been up to and research the builds. Thanks for having me here.

Thanks guys! Been working on a idea or two the last few days after reading through some builds. I have a few frames, one in peticular, that are floating around here at home and look forward to sharing my own build with everyone. My welding is fine...but I can see that my wood working skills are going to either improve....or be the end of me. lol

Thanks for the nice welcome.

Welcome Tim! Be glad you can weld. That is a skill I wish I had. Not being able to weld limited my design capability but I think I did fine with the frame I bought. I think woodworking is a much easier skill to learn. I do recall a shop teacher once telling me that you're either good at woodworking or metal working and you can't do both. I think he was just a cranky old fart but then sometimes I look at what I can do and he might be right!!! :o

Thanks again everyone. The first task is to figure out the posting tools here and then start a build thread. :D :pictures:

The two trailer frames I drug out are a 16 foot single axle and a 22 foot double axle. I seem to be favoring the 22 footer
because Im a good size dude. I also like my ATV and was thinking of making room for it in the front of the trailer. Just a thought.

And of course the first thing I do when any of you guys post, is check out your builds. So many builds here!!! Look forward to when mine will be available. lol.

Welcome aboard, and good luck on your build. My advice is, don't over-build and create a super-heavy trailer that you plan to pull behind your 1/2 ton truck. All of my teardrops weigh less than 500 lbs, and they are as solid as a rock. Check out some of the lighter materials and you will be another happy camper. However, if you are convinced to build heavy, good luck and come and join us at a campfire. 8) :? Roly, the li'l ol, TD woody guy in So Calif.

Welcome Tim,
This is the right place to be if you want to build a teardrop or tiny trailer.
I, for one, had NO woodworking skills when I started by build. As a matter of fact; If I had now discovered the Pocket-hole jig from Kreg; I would not have a teardrop.
I did not even have a table saw when I started, or a router, or ..............
Metal working skills is a great start. Looking forward to seeing your progress. :applause:
