winter hat for the tear

Postby rowerwet » Mon Nov 11, 2013 8:28 pm

since my hatch isn't quite as watertight as I thought, and I want to keep the garage space open for other projects. I put a roof over the tear where it hibernates.
I went for simple, two sheets of steel roofing, simple, light, and tough.
I made a simple deck of wood (scrounged from around here and crates from work) then screwed the steel to it.
keeping the ends from ripping up in the wind took some thought, I settled on conduit legs. they are pinned above and below each anchor ring so they can't lift in the wind, and also can't sag under a snow load.
I put weights on the corners before drilling the conduit legs for the pins, the for and aft beams are kept in an arc by the legs, so the water will run off each end easier.

I didn't get a picture until after dark today, so it isn't as clear as it could be.

If your hatch leaks and you choose to leave it outside, you might consider improving your odds by opening the hatch, and placing a sheet of plastic over the entire galley area.
It should extend from the hinge area to just below the floor, and side to side with a few inches hanging out past the walls.
Tape or fasten the plastic in the hinge area to be a little lower in the center than at the sides.
Close the hatch, leaving about a quarter inch space at the bottom. If that leaves too much space along the top of the walls, place a strip of compressible foam there under the plastic.
The idea is that any (most) water that would get in will run down the plastic and out onto the ground.
