Having driven several stock 1.7-2.0 914's, up to a 3.6L wide body track 914, I do not blame you at all. When you can throw yourself violently back in the seat at whim is a LOT of fun (I enjoy my Turbo Cayenne for that now). I am a much better driver, on the track and on the street, as well as a much better instructor because of my time with that car. I had a discussion with a fellow club racer once (he drove a 911 GT3) and he said a 914 was much easier to drive, and took a lot less skill. I countered that it is harder to get on trouble with a 914 (weight distribution of mid engine, plus lower speeds), but in turn, it was much harder to get lower lap times. Every mistake, extra moment not on the gas, etc was momentum you could never make up. If I butcher the corner coming onto a straight, I will never get that rolling speed back. It affects all cars, but the lower the HP, the greater the impact.
I will say, a 4 cylinder 914 handles noticably better then one with a bigger engine. Hence the Subaru conversions looking so enticing. It's not that they handle bad, but they just handle better with less weight. Throw one on an AutoX course and it is a massive difference.
I do concede, that a 914 with a big motor (911 or domestic) sure does sound impressive, and is a blast and a half to drive, especially as a daily.
