My name is Dave Munsterman, Owner of Turtleback Trailers LLC I love the camping industry and camping way of life. We manufacture small off road styled camping trailers in Phoenix AZ. http://www.turtlebacktrailers.com or https://www.facebook.com/turtlebacktrailers

I am going to start a build thread of a Turtleback 4x6 Expedition Inspired camp trailer here on TNTT showing how our units are built from start to finish. I'll show you all of the parts used and explain why if you would like. I know that some will have differing opinions yet this is what I have seen to be the best way from my fabrication and life experiences to create a unit that will last the test of time and not break the bank.

Next week I'll start with the frame and hopefully give enough detail to spur some interest in a thread.

Happy camping and creating,

Dave

This will be fun to follow, and a good way for you
to document your process.

We've doubled the Turtleback manufacturing area since you were there. Drop by when you're in the area Jim

Well I was going to wait and show each part as it went through the process in order but I just got the floor sections cut today and I was so happy with the job the cutter did. So I had to share a picture.

Thanks. It's a Laser. I'm thinking about getting a water jet though. More versatile

Well I said I'd share how we build our units and here I am. We spent the past month expanding our facility in addition to maintaining some production so It slowed me down on getting this thread started.

In this thread I'm going to share how we build our units top to bottom. For those building your own this may give you a few ideas, for those considering building a trailer you will see what a task it can be and for those on the fence perhaps you'll see that we can offer you a high quality unit for not much more than what you could build one for yourself.

So let's start at the base, the frame. We use all US sourced steel with thickness ranging from 16ga to .188". I built a jig or fixture to fab the chassis up on. Doing this we created a flat and square platform to work from. Just like building a house, if you're not square from the start you're in trouble later when the doors won't close.

Here's a picture of our frame fixture.

We cut out steel on a Hyd-Mech manual band saw. This is so much cleaner and quieter than an abrasive saw but most importantly is a true cut every time. We can swivel the head 60 degrees to cut the front of the trailer rather than guessing how long the stick needs to be and cutting it with a skinny wheel.

Well we only get 3 pics per post so I'll end this one and add some more.

I've got a free day today so I'm going to post some more pictures. I'm continuing where I left off. Here's a pic of the 60 degree cut for the nose of the unit.

After the nose is cut I notch it for the backbone and front receiver hitch. Pics to follow

I have a template that we created to cut a crisp notch on the nose. This is a critical point for the unit so a tight fit is a good idea.

Here's a pic after the nose is notched and ready. I cut it pretty close so we dress it out for the final fitment.

I like this method of trailer design because all of the parts are integrated. The tongue isn't welded on the bottom like my first unit. This gives better ground clearance and structural integrity.

It takes about a day to cut out and prep 5 trailers. When we started it took a day to do one. By getting a better saw that we could gang cut and cut with a quick swivel of the head for the angle cuts saved a whole bunch of time plus we eliminated the calculation and recalculations.

Here's a ready to weld nose

This sums up the nose on the frame.
