Post Photos?

Postby ocasioc25 » Thu Mar 06, 2014 8:59 am

I tried to post some photos and it wouldn't cause it's too large. I have dropbox. Is there any way I can make them smaller so I can post them? I don't have much built but it's a start. I read in here if there ain't any photos there ain't a build. LOL

Where problem seems to lie in today's web publishing and pictures, picture are so huge in pixel count and storage size (xxKB) with the new cameras that are capable of MEGAPIXEL'S is picture data is so massive and for web publishing are so big and it takes a ton of storage space on website servers.... For web publishing megapixel pictures are way beyond a size that displays well on websites... It's how your new wonderful technology is actually making life a bit harder on you....

There are utilities that can do the resize for you, basically its just editing software in your smart phone or tablet or PC.... You can load graphic, and then just re-save it to smaller format... Some websites have different criteria on picture sizes limitations though... A size the seems to work well on internet is 640x480 pixels.... Also saving graphic in JPG format (a compresses format) will reduce picture size in storage space size, which some sites also have limitations on...

IF you are on a PC based machine a pretty good picture/graphic editor is IRFANVIEW .. http://www.irfanview.com

Also there are websites on internet that can do it for you.... You simply upload picture to site and then when site asks you what size, you select proper size, website does its magic on picture then presents resized graphic to you for download...

http://www.picresize.com/
http://www.resizeyourimage.com/
http://www.webresizer.com/

Also GOOGLE can be your friend finding site or software the you can be comfortable with....

One thing I try not to do is resize the original picture... You never know when someday you want the master picture in its original size, I always try to work with a copy... Usually when making it I try to include a "S" in file name for small... Like original of "dumbo.jpg" and resized is "dumbo-s.jpg"....

I use Adobe Photoshop myself to dress up my pictures and to reduce the file size. But then, I had to purchase this software so it probably is not the way to go. For posting to sites like this, the above options that Dale and Woodbutchreference probably are better.

I use Flickr. Like Photobucket, no need to resize. They give you lots of options for posting size in the BBCode they give you to embed pictures. Flickr also comes with 1 TB of storage. That's 1000 GB. For free. You aren't going to run out of storage space.

Here's what it looks like when you post the pictures. I use the 800 pixel width. http://tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?t=58559

There are endless ways to reduce the photo size for posting. This has been discussed a bunch. I do realize some people struggle when it comes to computers and working with them. My advice is figure out what works for you on posting photos and then DO it. It only gets easier the more you do it.

As for saying that it is not worth your time to post photos... Well it is not worth my time to offer advice on subjects if someone does not feel it is worth their time to post photos. Sometimes you need the photos to help decipher what someone is able to communicate in written words. Plus this site would not be what it is if people chose to not post photos.

You can post photos up to 8 megabytes in size here, and the forum will resize them automatically to 640 x 480 or equivalent. :D

What add-on are you using to have the board software resize photos? Might be good feature for my blacksmithing website...

Really? I thought I I tried and it didn't let me. Then again, even if it did, I know it didn't let me do a batch upload and I wasn't going to upload 12 pictures of my latest update one at a time.

FWIW...I also got an error message that my photos were to large, (I was uploading 3 photos to my build journal - The Annex). I used windows "Paint " to resize them & everything worked.

when I'm in a hurry, I post the pictures to Facebook using http://download.cnet.com/Easy-Photo-Upl ... 28960.html it is the fastest and most reliable way to get pictures to FB, then I view them in on FB click the options button and download them to my downloads folder, they are slightly smaller than this sites cut off so they upload here super fast. on the second upload page here I change the picture name to something reasonable instead of the huge random string FB names them with.
