Vacuum Laminated Walls

Postby Atomic77 » Sat Mar 22, 2014 6:43 pm

If there is already a thread on this topic I didn't see it so my apologies. I have decided to do a build with vacuum laminated walls. The walls will be built from plywood and then coated with West Systems epoxy and covered with Filon. I plan on making a giant plastic bag to put each wall into, then using a vacuum pump to suck out all the air just like a giant seal-a-meal. I'm wondering if anyone else has done this and looking for some input on the subject. Thanks!
Michael

Yes
capnTelescope is busy with a build doing just that:

Together with CNC cutting of the panels it's really cool I must say.

I used a shop vac, plastic sheet, and bubble wrap (as a distribution media) to glue my inner wall skins onto my foam wall cores. Worked pretty good.

I think you could get a similar effect by using a pneumatic 23 gauge pin nailer. I'm pleased with the Hitachi NP35A 23-Gauge Micro Pin Nailer I have. The pins are nearly invisible. They make connecting pieces you glue up go very fast with no (or at least very little) need for clamps to hold the pieces together until the glue sets up permanently.
It is a pleasure (fun tool) to use. :)

Here are links to the parts of my build thread where I did the vac bagging.

I hope this gives you some ideas that will help you in your build!
