fiberglass m100 kit painting

Postby 123jay » Wed Apr 16, 2014 11:21 pm

I am putting together a M 100 fiberglass trailer kit it came in this bright white gel-coat.My plan is to paint with feather fill primer .To get to the color I want will use rust-oleum hunter green and flat white and baking soda to get the look I want .
What I need to know is what grit of sandpaper do I use to rough up the gel- coat this trailer has resets in it.
What is the best way to deal with them? Thank you

Light scuff sanding with 600 wet/dry to break the sheen (gloss) and give some tooth for the new paint would probably do it...

Generally I treat fiberglass finishes just like any automotive finishes, procedural wise... Block sanding would probably be best process to not leave finger groves in scuff sanding on main surfaces.... Simple hand sand or foam rubber or sponge in recess areas....

Again all you are trying to do is break the sheen (gloss) of the gel coat and give some tooth for the new paint ...

I would recommend spending the money and have an automotive paint place mix up some paint the color you want.

George Taylor thanks for your input..To get the car paint I wanted to have the look was over $ 348 with all the things I had to buy HARDENER,REDUCER .
Where I go it has a lot of things to mess the paint up so will have to repaint a few times a year

This one is a fiberglass tub, fiberglass hard cover, Harbor Freight frame (was red) and metal fenders, all painted with Hot Rod Flatz Olive Drab from TCP Global. Gallon kit includes hardener and reducer. I used probably 3/4 gallon to paint everything. I did shoot everything first with 2 coats of epoxy primer. Cost of paint materials was about $200 including the epoxy primer.

use a red colored scotch brite pad. you usually can find them at auto parts stores. we used them when I worked at a auto body/paint shop.
