7x14 CT project underway

Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

7x14 CT project underway

Postby Slyhuntr » Thu Jun 05, 2014 10:31 pm

This is my second post here, first was in the introduction section.
Got a wild hair and decided to make a dream come true.
My wife and I like trail riding on our Polaris RZR and decided instead of pumping a lot of money into
staying in cabins every time we go on a trip to start using the nice RV camping available at the places we go.
We both aren't interested in a large RV and decided to look into toy haulers. Seen some really cool
ones but just not impressed enough with them to lay out the cash they want or upgrade to a truck
to pull them.
So here we are, I had been thinking of converting a cargo trailer and finally pulled the trigger.
I ordered a Lark 7x14 V nose from a local dealer. I checked a couple different places with a
variety of different brands and most looked like the same quality and the ones that were "high end"
type were a bit too heavy for my taste.
I plan to tow this CT with our 99' Dodge Durango, 4x4 5.9L.
What I ordered: 7x14 V nose, tandem, RV door, 2 15x30 windows over axles, insulated, spare tire, 6" extra height, ramp on rear, Indigo Blue finish.
Estimate on weight from vendor, 2200 lbs delivered.

Haven't had much time collecting stuff as I though we had until end of July to wait, but I did pick up a Coleman RV 13500 btu A/C, and a Dometic High profile 310 toilet.

I ordered on 5/21/14, called today to inquire about an after thought about adding extra bracing at roof vent for A/C unit and
was informed, sorry trailer is complete at manufacturer awaiting QC. Looks to be here next week, couple weeks early.

I was hoping I wouldn't have to demo anything but may have to as I'm afraid the roof may not take the weight well without bracing.

Oh, I didn't tell the "Plan" for this trailer. Plan to build a forward shower / bathroom in the nose, cabinet with sink, storage, overhead cabinet with space for microwave,
small apartment refrigerator, full or queen bed in back that is collapsible or fold-able on wall to clear for the RZR to fit.
Also plan to have a fresh water tank for places that don't have water / electric hook ups, black and gray tanks, electric hot water tank or on demand. DC LED lights throughout.

I have other plans but I'm getting a bit long winded and tired, need to hit the hay so I can go to work tomorrow.

I'll update and clarify plans when I can.

Welcome to the CTC world. I hope you enjoy building yours as much has I have mine. I have the same size and built for the same reasons (except I dirtbike). I have some thoughts on the roof AC which is overkill for that size trailer. I ended up with a 5,500 BTU window unit that will run on just about any small <2000W generator and cools fine in Hot Florida. Following is my link. I went back and forth on AC types, ways to mount, and generators, solar power and etc.. This forum is great for ideas. I recommend looking around a bit before you start to get great ideas. And just remember what I have found to be true so far... you are never done building. Just when you think you are, you go camping and decide to change something or improve it.

Flyboy, I agree with you on the overkill on the a/c, my wife said she didn't want a window rattler so I decided on the rooftop. Got what I thought was a good price for a new unit and jumped.
Unit was $499, add on heat was $60 + tax.

Spoke with Matthew at Big Tex in Norman, trailer is being trucked from Georgia tonight, will arrive early tomorrow and should be picking it up late afternoon tomorrow!! Trying to not get to excited, you know the felling, kinda like a Christmas present you are about to unwrap. As I get older I have more self control on some things znd not so much on others,, this one of those others, I'm ready to get started building.

Was suppose to be here yesterday but it came in with road damage. Was told ours was loaded between two other trailers on the transport, nose of rear trailer moved into ramp of ours, skin was creased. They sent it to Waco plant to get the metal replaced, will be here tomorrow. Trust me there will be pics tomorrow after I get it.

Did get to install the brake controller though in the Durango. Was pretty easy since the truck has the factory tow package.

Wow. Nice trailer. I like the cover over the ramp door cable pulley's. That is a nice touch. Keep us posted on the build.

BTW, is that already insulated or do you have to pull all the wood off to insulate?

Been putting tape measure and serious thought on this and I have come to the conclusion it will be very difficult to put a shower (24x30) and a toilet in the space I need to.
If it wasn't for the frame of the trailer I could put the toilet all the way over by the door. Thought about a raised platform but then your right foot would be crammed into the side of the shower.

Finally came to the idea of a wet shower. Not really liking the idea but it makes the most sense. Thinking about a freestanding shower kit from Home Depot, 36x36 and mounting the toilet inside in a corner. Other option is create a the entire shower and build it from scratch. Maybe build the floor in the dimensions needed and fiberglass over it to seal it? Never have done much fiberglass but have a neighbor that I can call on that does.

Any ideas forum? I'm not going to rush this as I know I can make it work, just need a direction to go.

Got a few items today at Camping world. Power cord, battery box, a really cool Jack HDTV antenna ( wife insisted we have some way to watch tv at night...), some other small items.
Parts came in this week, Power converter 30amp, Fusion power plug wall mount, some LED lights from PilotLights.net.
