Applying stain over wood

Postby Terri » Mon Jul 14, 2014 11:36 am

Hello, We are getting ready to lay down our final exterior wood for the roof and sides. We are using thin marine grade plywood and will scribe all joins to blend the seams. I would like to get creative with the final look and love the look of the light bare wood combined with a dark stain in a swirl or wave across the sides. My question is,... because wood soaks in the stain, how do you keep it from spreading from one area into another? In other words, how can I keep the dark stain from running into the bare wood, when I apply it? We plan on using west system epoxy over the whole unit, (then a coat of two of urethane over that for UV protection). Can I apply a thin coat of epoxy, then apply a coat of water based stain, and then another coat of epoxy over it all to achieve this look or is there a way to stain on bare wood without one running into another.

Also, one more question, should we glue down the marine ply to the luan with wood glue or use epoxy for that as well? What has the best hold?

Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

Mask out your design and use an airbrush to lightly spray the stain on ..like fogging on paint....you can get a nice crisp line and see the grain come through....Work light to dark,.....

Apply light color stain all over, clean and dry. Mask and use gel stains for the darker parts.

Thank you, I did read that gel stain will help with this effect.

Make sure your stains work with epoxy. Epoxy does not adhere to certain stains. I used TransTint stain on my tongue box. The epoxy has adhered to the TransTint stain.

Wow, I never even thought about the epoxy not adhering to my stain. I will have to call the manufacturer before I start that process. Thank you.

http://www.westsystem.com/ss/epoxy-adhe ... er-stains/ They tested several stains. In general you want to avoid oil based stains but even some of those worked with sufficient dry time before epoxy applied. Search Google for epoxy over wood stain, boat builders have been applying epoxy over stained wood forever.

Words to live by whether or not you're going to coat with epoxy. I do like oil stains with oil finishes although that is probably more from superstition than necessity.
